Intermediate rocks in can sound
Hey
I have a 05 s/c 60k miles, the other morning i pull it into a parking spot and i hear this horrible noise from the engine bay like rocks rolling in a can, can this be my timing chain tensioner? Its only done it one other time today in the drive thru for like 10 seconds then gone. I know the TSB was for 06-07 balts with bad tensioners ive never heard this any idea? or any way i can test this? |
It wasnt coming from your supercharger? ...sometimes mines like like a rock tumbler.
|
im not sure honestly, by the time i pop the hood and start looking it stops. terrible sound, and im already replacing struts so kinda tight on money... what goes bad in the s/c? i heard there is a plastic thing in there? when i put my hand on it it felt like it might have more vibrations then it did without the sound...

I've seen timing chain tensioners that will do this . They get real loud for 15-20 seconds and then go away intermittently . They are really loud thou, almost sounds like a muffler dragging.

should i get this to the shop ASAP? |
Yep , it can . The severity of the surge would depend on how bad the tensioner is . If it's still intermittent I doubt it would surge much , but when the tensioner does finally collapses it would be noticable.
It's a cheap part thats been redesigned since 06.... takes about 1 hour to do. I would have it looked at right away before it damages the guides . The guides on my 06 were so brittle that when they hit the timing chain to activate the tensioner ...... the guide cracked ERRR..... It turned into alot of work after that . Here is that old Doc about bad timing sets , looks like the 05's didn't fall into it thou. Fr33k was the one who originally posted this .....I still can't find it anywhere in Dealerworld SI so GM hide this bitch somewhere. CONDITION/CONCERN: On rare occasions, a tick or rattle noise may be heard from behind the front cover of the engine and/or pieces of a timing chain roller may be found during an oil change. This may be the result of a timing chain concern. Non-heat treated timing chain rollers were randomly installed in the assembly line hoppers. He advised that this happened sometime between 4/1/06 - 11/1/06 so it can randomly affect late 2006 - early 2007 models. RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS: If this concern is experienced, inspect the timing chain for missing or damaged timing chain rollers. If a missing or damaged timing chain roller is found, replace the timing chain and gears using the part numbers currently listed in the parts catalog. Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. |

Ill update when I find something out, hopefully this wont be expensive... |
Both can make a similar sound...I've had both the tensioner and s/c issue in my old car. Tensioner, when it was making noise, was a constant loud ticking / tappping sound. The s/c noise was more metallic, and not a steady ticking, but more like rocks in coffee can sound.
|
How hard is it to replace the tensioner? I have 103000 miles on my car and I that is the noise that is coming from the engine now. Thanks for your time
|
It not too bad to replace. You have to take off the valve cover so you can tap the tensioner to release it. Just be careful when tapping it that you don't break any part of the guides cause those are a bitch to replace. Total your looking at a couple hours to do it the first time.
