I'm replacing a head gasket on my 08 LNF, was just wondering how long the job usually takes and if i should be aware of anything before i start?

 

If you haven't done it before, give yourself 2 days.

What happened to the current head gasket?

Nothing particularly tricky, there's a small shim on the LNF crank pulley gear that covers the timing mark, make sure you remove it to time the engine accurately when you put it back together. IMO this is a pretty easy engine to tear down and put back together.

 

The current head gasket needs to be replaced due to a (slow) coolant leak. I have a mechanic helping me too so i think we can do it in a day. Thanks for the help man

 

If you have a slow coolant leak on an 08 LNF, you probably have a porous block. A head gasket most likely won't help you.

 

are u sure its gasket and not porus block like every other lnf that looses its coolant. the gaskets don't usually fail.

 

Pretty sure its not the block, mine is a early 08 so i'd have to be extremely lucky to have a cracked block. Also i don't have any coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant so...

 

Well you did say it's a small leak, only way to find out would be to get the oil tested

 

It's not the block, trust me I've obsessed over my car possibly having that problem for the last 2 weeks. oil doesn't have any coolant in it so i mean, where else is it going? also, i work at a GM dealer and the shop said that they have had a few 08 lnf's come with the same problem before. so its not out of the question.

Not saying it isn't the head gasket, but a $30 UOA is cheaper than head gasket and studs

 

If you haven't gotten it tested, do it. It was suggested a week ago...

Best to cross your t's and dot your i's before possibly wasting a lot of time and money.

 

Id have it tested, just because its not in the usual build dates that most porous blocks happened doesn't mean anything. all blocks of that generation due to the casting process used
could be at risk.

 

I am doing the same but I am curious on what I should replace I would like to do everything so I don’t have to touch anything else right now I have my….. valve cover gasket, head gasket, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, turbo gasket, downpipe gasket, throttle body gasket, 4 new spark plugs anything else I should consider on replacing?
