s/c knocking noise

i know this has been discussed before at some point, but i dont believe it was answered definitely. my s/c is making a knocking / rattling noise which is more prevalent when colder temps. it started after i installed my k&n filter and removed the bottom of the airbox, which is the only thing i have done to the car. teh dealership blames the filter :nono: :thumbsdow and had bigger problems do deal with at the time, as the car is on its 3rd clutch and 2nd tranny.

so is my blower fuct? is it a sign of premature wearing out or something? i was considering going stage 2 but now im thinking it might not be a great idea:confused: i have heard of a term called "blower oscillation" that is known to cause damage. but i dont know what causes this nor if this rattling and knocking is a symptom of it.

help?

"as the car is on its 3rd clutch and 2nd tranny"

WTF  You are either pounding the shit out of your car or have very bad luck !

I don't know about the blower noise but how hard are you driving this thing ? With all of your problems I would have put it back to stock before taking it to the dealer.

I agree.

Put it back to stock immediately.

Also, do you have any other modifications that you have done? Did you change anything else besides your filter just recently? Is the noise coming from the s/c or the motor itself?

my friends and i are convinced its the s/c rattling. coming from the very front of the car and can even be heard through the exhaust. really didnt think taking off a k&n filter would make a big shittin difference, and the dealer didnt outright tell me that it voided any warranty, the tech just stated on the repair order: "upon inspection found to have K&N air filter. aftermarket intake pieces such as K&N may make supercharger louder"

i havent beat on the car. raced it at the track twice to see what times i could pull. but otherwise havent been beating on it. no clutch dumps, burnouts, didnt even launch above 2k rpm when i did race it. the tranny had to be replaced due to a crack in the case which leaked oil into the bell housing and ruined the clutch. however they replaced the clutch an extra time because they first thought it was just a leaking slave cylinder causing the oil in the bell housing. so thats wehre teh 2nd tranny and 3rd clutch come from.

wow so you did beat on it then,.,, the only way our housings crack is due to excessive wheel hop... or spin.. in which case you would have send the diff pin into the housing (seen a few of these) but yeah your s/c is probably alittle f'd up and you shouldnt be able to hear it out the exhaust... that could be a sign of some valvetrain damage... which I've also seen a few... if you know what your doing take off the s/c and inspect the rotors to see if the coating is being scratched off in places also hold the rotors and see how much play there is in the drive shaft....
If anything I"ll have my blower up for sale soon.. and there are a few up on ebay..
take it easier on the car man... these things don't take abuse so well after time

making 2 passes down the track hardly qualifies it as beating. ok, i did get some wheel hop at the track, but the tranny didnt start leakign oil until much later. and the crack was determined by the tech to be from the metal in the casing being too thin in one spot (ie: defective). the internals of the original tranny were still ok/intact.

im quite familiar with engine work so i will remove the blower, poke around, post some pics, and see what i find.

def let me know what you find... and I bet I know the exact spot where it was cracked... I have two trannys in my garage with the same thing

de modify and take to the dealership immeditatly.

Bika Oct 28, 2006 06:36 PM

mine cracked in the little indent beside the hydraulic line... just a hairline crack, it wasnt even visible to the naked eye. we had to clean all the oil out and pressurize the tranny to see where it was leaking.

ok. took the s/c off and inspected it. rotors look fine, no teflon scratched off. did notice a tiny bit of lash when holding the rotors still and twisting the pulley, but i dont think its anything out of ordinary.

i did find the tensioner pulley to have some play in it :thumbsdow so i checked the bolts (didnt need much tightening) it seems like just the pulley wobbles some.

btw - anyone have an easier way to release the belt tension? pushing down on the pulley didnt seem to be the healthiest way to get it done. probly would make the pulley even more loose:nono:

when do you hear the rattling? what gear and are u on wot when u hear it? i hear that too but only @ wot at any gear below 3k rpm.

Rattle Noise At Idle

Check out http://www.intense-racing.com/

I copied the information below from the intense site.

"The coupler is the part that mates the supercharger rotors to the belt driven snout. Over time the stock coupler wears out and the holes become oblong. This causes a rattle noise at idle.

Code: LSJ-INT-SCC
Price:$29.99

Shipping Weight: 1.00 pounds"

I have had the same rattle noise from the time the car was new. It comes and goes. If I rev the engine to about 3,000 rpm it will go away and stay away for days and sometimes up to a month.

Bika Oct 30, 2006 07:37 PM

yes, this only happens between idle and 2000rpm. i'll check into that Intense part, even though i think its a lil premature (<9,000 miles) for that to be occurring

back to my other question, how have you guys released the tension on the belt? theres gotta be someting im missing that would make this easier:confused:

Shanman Mar 25, 2007 11:47 PM

same with me rattles at idle then rev it to 3k and goes away taking to dealership tomorrow i thimk its supercharger bearing
