shaking
Occasionally when I'll be driving on the highway my gas pedal will begin to shake. It will grow increasingly violent and move up to the steering wheel as well. I will slow down to get off the highway and the whole steeringwheel and pedals will all shake violently. Does anybody know what is going on and how to prevent this. Most of the time i drive this doesn't happen. Only about 25% of the time which is enough for me to be concerned with. When i get off the highway as my car decelerates to around 30mph the shaking ceases, usually for good. My car is a 2006 cobalt ss. Any help would be appreciated thanks

Vid of when it happens? More info on your car as well, engine, trans type, mods etc. will be useful for trying to figure it out over the internet. |

can't get a video. Its a 2.4L no supercharger no Turbo and everything is stock as far as i can tell its a manual transmission. The car is new to me it has 54k on it. I think the previous owner just bought it and drove it until it 53k and sold it... Idk a whole lot about it yet. the shaking seems to happen more when i push the car to higher RPMs like 4k or 5k and then start driving normally. It has happened when I drive normally as well. When I am driving at speeds of 60-70 the shaking seems to be more compact and as I slow down the shaking becomes less dense and more violent. Like i said around 30-40 mph the shaking stops and usually stays gone.

when your feeling things in your steering wheel like vibrations, check your tires, and see the wear pattern. general question: do all cobalts have electrical stearing? |

auto tranny- push gas and go
manual- there is this shifter, 3 pedals and you have to use two of them at certain points when driving. |
So do you have a clutch pedal and are you shifting when you drive this car? If so, then you have a manual transmission.

I use all three of my pedals at certain times while driving.
I'd check the tires or maybe the balacing weights fell off. My car drove like shit when 3/4 of my weights fell off. |

as far as i can tell everything is stock...
I have a manual transmision... seprate thoughts... honestly guys? i know im new but c'mon lol... if anyone has a picture of a streering column that would be a good thing to look at, I believe my brake line is leaking and i have never had ABS before and know little about it so i'm not sure if that could affect it. Thanks for the ideas of things to look for, keep them coming |
I have found a whole slew of threads about the steering wheel and pedals shaking but once the problem is fixed no one ever mentions what the problem was for sure. Many threads say routers many threads say wheels or weights, One thread said steering motor. Its the same problem as the other cars and should have only one solution. If anyone has had this problem and fixed it can they tell me what they did...
I can't afford new routers, alignment, fixed weights, steering motor, new steering column. |
I'm taking it to my mechanic today then I'll post what he says so that whoever else runs across this problem will have a solution

Well after the mechanic visit we found that my tires were off balance by .75 oz. So i thought the problem is fixed and on my way home my steering column started to shake again but this time the car started to loose power and deccelerate... So here are my questions if anyone still reads this anymore... could it be power steering I heard that goes,
if it is my power steering how long would it take before it goes completely or is that indeterminable? if it is my power steering how would it make my pedals shake as violently as the wheel and how come i decelerate? If i lose power to the engine is that a drivetrain problem even though the problem is power steering? Finally, if its not power steering what are other options? |
if it not the alignment im stumped.....im curious to know what is wrong.......

Do you have custom rims on the car or the stock ones?

You could try rotating the tires front to back one at a time. To see if it goes from a steering wheel shake to a rear end shimmy

I have stock rims but how would these solutions account for a deceleration I thought that rims, tire rotation, and alignment wouldn't have anything to do with a loss of power...

When your car is shaking, push in the clutch all the way. Does the shaking disappear, lessen, or continue with no effect. This can help you possibly pinpoint or rule-out drivetrain.

Im thinking now its the steering motor or the control box for it.
The motor hunting gives you the feel in the pedal and as you speed up the speed senitive steering starts(not sure what speed that is but probably aroung the time the radio volume goes up on its own) And thats when you get the real shaking. I will go for with the bad steering motor or the steering control module. You could pull the fuse and drive it (hard to steer though) and see if the problem goes away. Do it on the highway so you relativly only have to drive straight,pull over yank the fuse and then drive to make it happen . |

I think ur blinker fluid is low. :lol: seriously though, is there anything blocking the air dams flowing in the fender. My steering wheel shakes like its about to fall off it there is snow or ice caught in the fender. On another note, check ALL FLUIDS. Powersteering, brake fluid, tranny fluid, etc. If everything checks out, check to see if maybe you rotors are causing the problem. |

I was thinking rotors too like 1badss/sc said just because that's what my grand am did when they got real bad. Just check everything you feel comfortable checking and knowing and if u can't find anything take it to the dealer see if they can atleast help pin point the problem
