Timing Chain Tensioner problem? (vid included)
Kinda in a hurry to get this fixed, so I had to post here as well as the redline forums...
So i'm pretty certain my timing chain tensioner is going, or has went... Car is an 04 Redline with 54k on it... Same rocks/marbles in a can noise from the tensioner area... So my question - what are the symptoms besides the noise, and possibly rougher running that come along with this? My car has been running a good bit warmer since the noise started, but temps jumped to the 60's, so it could be a dual cause. The car also wants to sit around 1300 rpm before dropping to idle, at which the noise from the tensioner area is the worst. Does the rpm hang come as a symptom of the tensioner? (throttle body has been recently cleaned)... And lastly - I don't have a garage to tear it down and do it where I live, but my parents house - where I would do my work is about 60 miles away. Now I know full well what driving a car out of time can do, but has anyone had theirs fail completely while driving? if being completely easy on it I should be able to make the drive home, but I want to make sure once the noise starts it won't just go all of a sudden. Any help is appreciated...

If you believe it is the timing chain tensioner, its easy enough to check.
First, if you are warranty, stop reading and go to the shop. Let them fix it.
Now, if you are not under warranty, simply remove the tensioner and check it. There are detailed instructions in the Build Book for removing and reinstalling it. The only trick is you need a really big wrench.

You are not an employee of the shop. It won't matter what you bring them on paper. You can not tell them how to fix it by handing them a TSB and saying "this is whats wrong". Just go in like a normal customer and tell them about the sound you are hearing.
What aftermarket parts do you have that you think the warranty is void? You probably could have left everything alone.
The timing chain is inside in the engine, but the tensioner is on the outside.

I had to have mine replaced and it is an issue with 04 redlines and 05 SS/SC's
It will sound like a rattle that gets more noticeable in turns and the idle will be weird. Your symptoms sound just like it. I would say yes that is exactly your problem.

yea, its timing chain, i just had mine fixed on saterday, sounded same and everything
took about 30-45min to fix, its real easy
the 2.2s have the same problem(had my friend that works at a saturn dealer fill me on it) they just go bad, from GM they cost about 70$, autozone has them for 21$ i think but i dunno if it works, its some aftermarket company, but it may
basically take of the valve cover, hold the chain tight, remove old tensioner, put new one in, hit chain with rubber mallet to set the tensioner and ur set

Your aftermarket parts have to be responsible for the problem. Mounts and an intake really can't cause much of a problem.
Glad you found the problem. See how it was in fact not what you thought at first? Don't allow yourself to jump to popular conclusions. Lifters aren't to bad of a replacement.

Um, "mounts and an intake really can't cause much of a problem". So I guess if I was to word it a different way; Your aftermarket parts are not responsible for the failure of a timing component.

yea what he said, it has been a common problem for years, back when the ions first came out, GM has changed this tensioner 4 times and it still occurs...
2.2s/2.0s use the same part and they all can fail at anytime, stock or not, its just back luck for the most part

hmm, i dont know if thisi s the thread to subscribe to for that, this is on the other side of the car(im guessing your poppin noise is near the trans area?)
but i dont know what it could be unless its something to do with you they way you put your car back together, like your steering is loose or somethings, maybe your slave cylinder is bad which should be replaced when putting in a new clutch which i am also told should be replaced bout everytime you drop your trans
thats the best things i can think of

well to drop the trans you do have to take the hub/axle out, check all that stuff, make sure the axle is in correctly
i used to install axles on the line in a assembly plant, the axle looks/feels in properly but isn't acutally locked in, happened all the time, always had to use a pickle fork to check to make sure, that would be one of my guesses
other than that check your break hub and make sure its working properly
