Turbo trouble?

So I have a 2008 ss/tc with about 12,3xx miles on it, tuned by Stevo, oil changed every 3k miles, so far nothing's gone wrong until this morning when I turn it on and I hear a slow ticking(not the normal ticking that you hear) and it increases as you give it gas. It definitely sounds like it's coming from the rear of the engine. Any thoughts? Also with this whole warranty deal...I dunno what to do. Someone is willing to let me use their stock ECU so I can get it checked out but what could it be? I'm sad.

No I doubt that, but hopefully they'll give that a look too. I just hope it's nothing big if they find my tune I don't have the cash to fork over to fix something important lol.

does it go away when warmed up? exh leak will tick like a lifter, if its more than a tick and more like a knock or clack it does not look good...

here's how i can describe the sound's your direct injection makes a ticking noise if it is louder/slash heavier more violent then it could be a rod knock (which i highly doubt)

change anything on the exh lately?

and wtf is up with 12k mi on her already you just got it! i am at 26k and i had it exactly 2yrs

This sounds like a low oil pressure problem. How long since the last oil change? And who did it? And have you checked the oil level recently?

Hope your problem is easily fixed.

Well I can't really hear the sound once I drive it because the rest of the engine is so loud, It's due for an oil change in 300 miles or so and I always take it to my dealer. It's not a knock or a clank...I wish I had a sound clip lol. Only thing done to the exhaust is the muffler is removed, but that was done in November or December...not sure which. Heeelllpp.

I wonder if the timming chain tensioners are the same style as a lsj ? I've seen an 08 2.2 that makes the same noise you describe and the tensioner was bad.

I dunnoooo I'm gonna check the oil level this morning before I leave, I'm driving it reeeeally carefully I don't want anything to blow up lol. But the sound is definitely coming from the middle rear...but I guess I could be wrong. I'm taking it to a different dealer tomorrow as is to see if they can figure out what's wrong, and if they find my tune just say no thanks, put in the stock ecu and take it to my regular dealer. Being jobless sucks or else I wouldn't care about spending the $$ to fix it, I only have $1100 budgeted for this. Come on LNF owners help me out heeeere.

#09-06-01-004: Clicking/Ticking Sound/Noise Heard from Rear of Engine (Install Sound Isolation Cover Over High Pressure Fuel Pump) - (Apr 1, 2009)

Subject: Clicking/Ticking Sound/Noise Heard From Rear of Engine (Install Sound Isolation Cover Over High Pressure Fuel Pump)

Models: 2008-2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, Cobalt SS, HHR, HHR SS

2007-2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP

2007-2009 Saturn SKY Redline

2007-2009 Opel GT

2007-2009 Daewoo G2X

Equipped with 2.0L Engine (VIN X -- RPO LNF)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition
Some customers may comment on a ticking sound from the rear of the engine. Upon investigation, the technician may find the sound coming from the high pressure fuel pump and/or the injectors.

Cause
The 2.0L turbo engine (VIN X - RPO LNF) uses a direct injection fuel system that operates at very high fuel pressures. A direct injection fuel system produces a rapid, clicking/ticking sound that can be heard from the engine compartment. The sound is more evident when outside around the vehicle or when the hood is open. The sound is more noticeable during idle, and is more frequent during a cold start but lessens once the engine is warm. The rapid ticking noise on cold start up is the fuel pump (located on the rear of the cylinder head) building up high fuel pressure. When the engine warm-up is completed, the high pressure fuel pump will continue to tick at a lower rate of approximately one tick per second during idle. The clicking sound is the fuel injectors pulsing on and off under higher fuel pressures. These sounds are the results of a normal direct injection fuel system operating properly.

Correction
Install a sound isolation cover over the high pressure fuel pump following the procedure below. This will make the sound coming from the high pressure fuel pump less noticeable, but it will not completely eliminate it.

Important: DO NOT attempt to replace any parts for this kind of clicking or ticking concern.

Verify the noise is coming from the high pressure fuel pump.
Remove the air inlet grille panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement in SI.
Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the high pressure fuel pump.
Remove the engine wiring harness from the high pressure fuel pump cover bracket.

Remove the high pressure fuel pump cover bolts (1).
Remove the high pressure fuel pump cover bracket.

Remove the old design cover and install the new high pressure fuel pump insulator, GM P/N 12628069.
Position the high pressure fuel pump cover bracket. Install the high pressure fuel pump cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 Nˇm (89 lb in).

Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the high pressure fuel pump.
Attach the engine wiring harness to the fuel pump cover bracket using a zip tie.
Install the air inlet grille panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement in SI.

Do you know anyone with HPTuners?

You will void your warranty SO fast.

What are your mods besides the tune?

Hmmmmmm definitely is coming from the rear, but is it an actual problem that they fix? I don't want them to just muffle the noise if there is actually something wrong ya know? Because up until yesterday it didn't make that sound at all.

I do know someone...only other mods I have is the muffler is gone and an air filter lol. What if I use a stock ECU?

/you didn't notice it.

The ticking is normal more than likely. Once it fully warms up, at idle it should almost sound like it is tick tocking.

No it sounds like a cicada bug...like it sounds like it has a lisp when it's ticking lol I let someone on here listen to it and he definitely noticed it. It's really hard to explain without letting you listen to it. I just know it's not right, I listen to my car when I warm it up every day and this isn't what it used to sound like.

Your best bet, is asking someone with HPTuners to flash your car back to stock.

Do you know anyone?

I have a stock LNF file for an 08(mine obviously lol) that I can email you after work if you know someone who can flash you.

Just have them save your tune you have now before they flash the stock tune...and be sure to have 100 bucks handy for the credits.

Cool, like I said.

If the person with HPT can, see if he can get the stock tune off the HPT tune repository...you may not have to wait

My question is, I want to figure out what the problem is before it's too late, so should I take it in to a different dealer as is to at least find out what's wrong?

Okie dokie thanks, I just text messaged him. I love my car and I'm returning $400 worth of jeans so that I can have $$ to fix it lol.

NO.

Anything powertrain possible they scan and take a picture of the parameters and what they are supposed to do, then they mail it to GM before they even see it.

GM either says aye(if the parameters match to stock/GM stage tune yada yada) or they say your powertrain warranty is voided completely which is completely legal obviously.

Just try not to drive it too much

Should only need 100 bucks for credits, then you can call up a dealer and be like

YO

MAH **** IS BROKE

you can also find the stock 08, or 09 lnf tune file in the tune repository on hpt website. they are both there. thanks to psychostevo.

and you wouldent have to buy credits if you could wait till the dyno day. he will be there.
