water getting in air intake... help?
 

I have an Injen CAI on my 06 ss/sc and it keeps sucking in water every time that it rains. when it does that, it shorts out the Mass Air Flow Sensor. Anyone else run into this problem?

you should get a hydroshield for your filter.. TTR carries them

I'm pretty ignorant of all the brands and stuff... what's TTR?

I was looking at it when I had it all apart Monday so that I could replace that sensor, and a lot of the water was getting in from all the cracks and stuff around the plastic fender..

I have this issue too. Went thru a big puddle once and sucked up some water. Ever since almost every time it rains I have to drive really lightly or I have bad driveablity issues and have to let the car run shitty for 15 mins until it dries out

i have a similar problem. i have a 06 S/C with a injen CAI. mine gets stuttery/choppy like it doesnt want to accelerate passed 4krpms. doesnt matter what gear im in. best bet is a hydroshield (I still need to buy one). try the weatherstripping or anything around your driver's side headlight. and baby it and stay out of boost in wet weather. i just keep my rpms low around 2-2.5k and shift at 3.5k and i have no more probs. its the moisture messin up your MAF readings. any boost over 5psi will cause your S/C to suck that moisture in

TTR = Turbotechracing. its a vendor that sells alot of cobalt parts. including the hydroshield. the hydroshield part number for cobalts is X-1033. not sure what TTR's price is but i think i found the best deal from amazon.com. theres red blue n black.

the biggest issue that I have with it is that the MAF sensor gets wet and sends the computer into 'limp' mode. when that happens it won't even idle, let alone actually go. I had to replace that sensor Monday and the thing cost me $80 some dollars.. I looked and there's just too many places that water can get in, so I'm thinking that I would still have the same issue even if I put weather stripping around the light.. and I bought the car used with an aftermarket intake, so I don't have the stock intake to just put it on for now

A buddy of mine had this problem with his 06 monday night. cleared codes and swapped the maf sensor off of another car to test it and it ran fine. He went to the dealer today to have his replaced


I can say that I never had a problem with my 07 SS/SC with K&N intake. After over 3 yrs and 27,000 miles it was still fine. the shield was falling apart too

My car doesn't have a shield in it at all. it's just free floating, waiting for trouble to come along. lol

when i had my dryflow filter in i had this issue, havnt had one issue with my oiled filter. idk

i have a dryflow. maybe i should switch to oiled

The best advice here has been said. Don't boost in the rain, or wet conditions, seal up or weather strip the driver headlight, and hydroshield!

I had this problem once, and got a hydroshield, and stopped driving like a moron in the rain, not to say you are, but i was, and havent had a problem since! Good Luck!

it was night and day for me in the rain.

It seems to be a hit or miss on these cars.

My other cobalt used an Injen dry-flow and I had that problem.

Now with my 2006, I use the K&N provided with the intake, and I've never had a problem.

I guess that I can attest to it being the dry filter. Never thought about that until now though.

My Injen has the Amsoil dryflow filter, and I have never had one issue with water at all.

Even when I had the AEM dryflow filter I had no water issues.

I've never had a problem because I have always used a hydroshield.

OP: Purchase a hydroshield.

i have the K&N Typhoon w/o a shield and havnt had any problems

hahahahah! ^ me too! i attempted to replace the plastic wheel fender, not so much that bitch got sucked out by my front tire! lol... oh well it hasn rained much in this part of Tx so i haven ran into this prob much :) id say hydroshield from where they say TTR or Amazon, but amazon prob cost lots more soo... stick w/ vendor ;) :twothumbs

Thats because you have an oiled filter. Oil repells water ;)

I still ran a hydroshield when I had a K&N filter. The filter placement on these cars is just asking for problems. Better safe than sorry.

I had this problem with my Fujita intake. Replaced filter with spectre filter from Autozone, believe it is an oiled filter, and taped up the cracks around maf sensor and where intake tube and filter come together so no water can leak in by running down the tube. I also bought a pre-filter(hydroshield) from outerwearsracing.com. I also replaced the maf sensor and have had no problems since. And we have seen ALOT of rain up here over the last month. Will put up a couple pics.
