Won't start/Security Lock out

Hi Guys,
I Have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged. I was driving to work today and the Engine decided to shut off. As I coasted to a stop, I got a solid security light and the digital display read out: POWER STEERING and LOW FUEL. I know I have over a half a tank of gas. When I came to a stop, I tried to start it but it wont crank over. The door locks do not work but everything else seems to. My gas gauge shows an empty tank. I tried waiting ten minuets to start it, wont work. I disconnected both battery terminals, touched them together for 20 sec and re connected them, still nothing. Can't find any good tricks online and I fear that tomorrow I have to get it towed to the dealership.

If anyone has any info on this before i get ripped off at the dealership, please let me know.

Thanks -CB

Try leaving your key in the on position for ten minutes until the security light goes off. Then turn it to the off position and try to start it .

Bergeron85 01-30-2012 04:49 PM

Just left the key in for 15 mins in the ON position. Light would not go out and would not start. Still says "POWER STEERING" & "LOW FUEL". WTF! Anything else?

I left it overnight with the battery disconnected and hooked it up this morning. Didn't start. Tried to jump it, didn't start. Think i'm going to have it towed to the dealership. Sucks...

Just checked them. All look good. Anyone know what this might cost if its the BCM?

Got it back. A battery wire in the trunk corroded and broken. Replaced that and everything is working great now. Go figure.

Just had this today. Drove it for 25 minutes, got gas, wouldn't start. Would start when boosted. Tested battery voltage, came in at 9.5v. Bought new battery and everything is fine

Had something like that happen to me. Wouldn't stay running after I got gas. Replaced a valve that lets air out of the tank when you gas up and it did the trick. Hope that helps

^ Since I've replaced the battery I haven't had any issues. With it reading 9.5v at resting, I'm "positive" that the battery went "negative". haaaaa

Thanks though.

I encountered the Chevy Cobalt issue where the security light would turn on and the gauges would all go wonky and occasionally “twitch”. Also, the text screen would flash “POWER STEERING” and “LOW FUEL”. Sometimes this was accompanied by the transmission shifting poorly and the power steering actually not working.

I identified the problem, but haven't replaced anything yet. While the problem was presenting, with the car running I looked directly under the dash/steering column and found the power steering motor. There is a large module with three connectors. Two of the connectors are heavy gauge and obviously power. The third is a bundle of 5-6 smaller wires. The moment I unplugged that small bundle, all the gauges went back to normal and everything(except the power steering) worked properly. I plugged it back in and everything went crazy again. It seems apparent it's the module itself or the wiring harness TO that module.

This is a quick, easy and free way to find the root of the problem and much more certain than all the other speculation I've been seeing. I'm posting because I saw this problem all over the web with no solutions.

You can open and close the door- It doesn't matter. You will need to get in and out since you need to push in the clutch.

1. Depress the clutch and try to start the car. If it does not turn over, let off, but leave the key in the run position. The security light should be lit up on the dash.

2. Wait 10 minutes(you can open the door and get out). The security light on the dash will turn off after 10 minutes.

3. Turn the key off for 5 seconds, then depress the clutch and try to start the car. If it does not turn over, let off, but leave the key in the run position. The security light should be lit up on the dash.

4. Wait 10 minutes(you can open the door and get out). The security light on the dash will turn off after 10 minutes.

5. Turn the key off for 5 seconds, then depress the clutch and try to start the car. If it does not turn over, let off, but leave the key in the run position. The security light should be lit up on the dash.

6. Wait 10 minutes(you can open the door and get out). The security light on the dash will turn off after 10 minutes.

7. Turn the key off for 5 seconds, then depress the clutch and try to start the car. The car should start on this attempt.

next time post your broken car problems In the problems and service section

look at post #14

it was a battery wire that corroded and broke.
