Need some decal disaster advice!

;) Hey all, just recently got a 05 Cobalt SS/SC and with it came a spider.

So, yeah, I'm not a spider person though it is kind of a nice touch, but no. Researched and started peeling armed with adhesive remover and hope. Passenger side turned out great! A little outline left.

I did the driver side today and it turned out like crap. :cussing:
The vinyl didn't peel smooth, and left massive residue that I couldn't get off like the other side. Even took some paint in some patches.

So, I need help. I found a site called paintscratch that can match my color using my vin or something, but should I even go down that route? Is there something else I can do without getting it painted?

if its just the residue on there left then id hit it with some goo gone or other adhesive remover and wait for it to activate then wipe clean (basically the same technique as used when de-badging)

Killa SS 07-10-2012 09:47 PM

goo gone for the residue, and talk to your dealership out a small paint pen thats color matched to your car. its a small thing thats for doin touch ups on paint

BoostedBeaner 07-10-2012 09:49 PM

Poor car. Good luck fixing your problem

atmidnight 07-10-2012 09:52 PM

I don't think goo gone will work honestly. I'll try it though.

Sunburst_SS 07-10-2012 09:56 PM

on an unrelated note........what's up with your exhaust tip?

atmidnight 07-10-2012 10:07 PM

Not sure. It''s slanted though like the tip is. Is that what you mean?

And does anybody know if buffing will do anything? Or something besides goo gone?

Slowbalt2000 07-10-2012 10:09 PM

try buffing. maybe some compound?

ssyellow 07-10-2012 10:18 PM

Buffing should help a lot. That exhaust tip looks like its shooting into the ground....

reduf99 07-10-2012 10:25 PM

flames hit the ground much safer than the car behind you ahhaaha

and yea goo gone should do it that shits amazing

ssyellow 07-10-2012 10:30 PM

Oh thats residue.

I had a vinyl that was on my hood when I bought my car for 7 years. Get a razor (yes, a razor) and carefully use it to get the adhesive off OR try rubbing alcohol with a rag combined with heat. Both methods worked like a charm for me.

reduf99 07-10-2012 10:34 PM

i used a razor for my tint but i wouldnt trust myself with a razor on paint

Car's super nice. Why did they ruin it with a gay ass decal?

Thanks! Haha, that's what everyone says. And they make fun of my exhaust as well ;) Not sure if it's a muffler, or a tip, or what but it's gigantic.

I'm gonna pick up some goo gone after work tomorrow and see how it goes. It's just weird, the passenger side left residue as well but that stuff cleaned up okay with the spray I had. The driver side is just being retarded. I will update!

atmidnight 07-11-2012 06:26 PM

Alright guys, I got the goo gone but it didn't work so I'm beginning to think it isn't residue. I'm not sure where to go from here. ;)

Haha, I was afraid of that. I'll start looking into it then. ;) Stupid spider :r:

TommyP 07-11-2012 07:24 PM

That's residue. a LOT of it. Buffing will work it will just take time to get it all off. Goo gone isn't that strong it will just take a lot of it to work.

BPacak 07-11-2012 07:25 PM

try to buff it or something, rest of the paint is probably just dirty.

09TcSedan 07-11-2012 07:28 PM

DONT USE A RAZOR BLADE TO GET RESIDUE OFF PAINT lol

i bet a little compound will take those 2 marks off. if you dont have a buffer you should be able to go to your local full service car wash and ask a detailer to try and get it off. it shouldnt coost you to much

startingline05 07-11-2012 07:44 PM

If the buffer and compound don't work you could just color sand it. It will get it out and bring some color back. Then you buff with compound. If you do this, dedicate the weekend to doing the whole car. It will give it a brand new fresh look.

atmidnight 07-11-2012 10:12 PM

Thanks guys. :twothumbs

What buffer do you recommend? Probably not that cheap one at Walmart, huh? ;)

startingline05 07-11-2012 10:28 PM

The dewalt is pretty beast

If you've never buffed a car, take it somewhere and have a professional do it. You don't know what might be under that adhesive. If they paint is fadded, it will need a lot of correction work.
