re-clearing CF trunk
 

Does anybody have suggestions on a specific product to use for re-clearing a carbon fiber (extreme dimensions) trunk? i'm having it done by somebody with experience with vehicle applications, but want to make sure we're using the right clear coat. Would anything off the shelf (clearcoat, of course) at an auto paint store be right? i'm reading about reducer, hardener, etc, and want to make sure we're getting exactly what is necessary.

If the guy with experience does not know, find a new guy....

I have mine all sanded down, had to patch a section with new cf. Then i epoxied over it and sanded. Just gotta keep sanding till its all 1800 grit smooth then im taking it somewhere for clearing. Sooo... in.

Lol, I would normally agree, but I trust his work. He doesn't paint autos for a living, but has sprayed/cleared multiple fleets in his work history. it's just his first time working w/CF so i thought to ask.

It's no different than if you were 're-clearcoating a regular trunk. My buddy and I did my hood last summer with no issues.

if its a relatively new trunk you need to sand it with 1000 flat so theres NO SHINEY SPOTS and clear it over with a good high solids clear.

if its all hazed you will have issues more then likely. that's really hard to get rid of. you have to sand the hazing totally off or it will show through the new clear. same process really.

yes the trick is to check your progress while sanding; wipe your area with a wet rag or something and that will give you an idea on how it will look when recleared. so you can see if the shitty spots and sunburnt areas are gone.

Yes, make sure there is no shiny parts, very important. I had hazing and with a good few hours of sanding I was able to get rid of it all. No haze after re clearing.

Basically u want a uniform haze that clears up nice when you get it damp

All of our Carbon Creations parts come with a clear coat as well as UV Coating and even includes a 1 year warranty! I definately recomend to add an extra layer of clear while getting installed at the bodyshop to ensure nothing happens but its up to the customer.

I had my Carbon Creations Tjin trunk on my car recleared and smoked at the bodyshop and have had on over a year with no problems!

I want to buy the Tijn carbon fiber trunk but have been iffy since I don't know how to keep the clear coat lasting for a long time.

Waxing should protect the clear

^^what he said. Making sure it's taken care of is a big thing. I think this one was just neglected and spent a lot of time in the sun. it still looks great, just a bit faded in a couple spots.

You need to have it re cleared at a body shop. The extreme demensions clear isnt good and it will yellow. Have a good shop put 3 coats and wetsand it flat and buff it. Waxes and sealents will do the rest. Just putting waxes and sealents on their stuff without a reclear wont do a lot

I bought Rices CF trunk it will be going to the body shop this week.

when I had the cobalt and my wifes scion as soon as we got carbon products we brought them to the body shop and had them professionally cleared. Never had any issues after that. All that's need to be done is sanded down and cleared. Just not sanded down enough to disturb the weave.

If they sand it flat with 1000 grit wet you will be fine
