Getrag F23

Type: transverse front wheel drive, five-speed manual transaxle.

2.2L/2.4L Automatic

Type: four-speed front-wheel-drive, electronically controlled, automatic overdrive transaxle with electronically controlled torque converter clutch.

Engine Range: 2.2L-3.5L
Max Gearbox Torque: 325 lb.-ft.

Weight: 188 lbs.

Assembly Site: Windsor, Ontario

Applications: Chevrolet: Cobalt, Malibu, Pontiac: G5, G6, Saturn Vue 4-Cylinder.
With a max TQ rating of 325 lb/ft, it doesn't seem to be the weak link..




2.0L Supercharged

GM Europe F35

Type: transverse front wheel drive, five speed manual transaxle.

Engine Range: 2.0L
Max Gearbox Torque: 258 lb.-ft.

Weight: 99 lbs.

Applications: Chevrolet Cobalt SS

 

wow, cant believe how much stronger the auto is compared to the 5 speed...

 

will the auto bolt up to the 2.0???

 

I know that is pretty crazy.

I don't think so. I don't know for sure though.

 

i know the manual trannies on the 2.0 vs the 2.2/2.4 use a different flywheel and clutch and whatnot, so they wont bolt up...so the auto tranny probably wont bolt up either....it might not take a lot of work to make it bolt up though

 

how can the max torque for the 2.4 tranny be within 10ftq of the rated output of the stock car?

I don't know. The info is straight from GM. Also remember they can probably hold more. GM seems to under rate things a lot.

dang and to think a couple of people on here said the f35 could handle more then the 4t65e. 400 ft-lbs is pretty good and would let alot of people to run 350whp and slicks and be fine.

 

I'm surprised. You can put some decent power to those.

 

It's an older tranny and was designed with V6s in mind...

 

its all about bellhousing for the auto to 2.0 swap. the f40 will not fit in the 2.0 sorry. you can get it regeared by QUALIFE... or built by a pro tranny builder(shoot peened gears and stronger shift forks).. but its $$$$

ok so i have done some research not much cuz i still have questions. The saab 9-3 uses an lk9 2.0l ecotec engine that is as far as i can tell the same as the lsj or ls1. the lk9 however uses the f40 transmission where as the lsj uses the f35. This is the first time I seen this thread since I been back. All I have to say is the LSJ tranny weighs alot more then 99 pounds lol. If that would of been the case I could of bench pressed it back into the car. That thing took 4 of us to pick it up and place it in correctly lol.

 

The auto tranny weighs a damn ton...that's why it can handle 325 ft'lbs of torque.
Interesting information though. I wasn't aware that the f23 was so limited. The 2.2l and 2.4l manualguys really need to be careful with F/I or Nitrous Oxide applications

Well thats the problem. I have a 2.2 man and i thought that i would be ok running aprx 250hp through the tranny as long as i drove it as the gears were straight cut. I know that sounds dumb but it just invovles double-clutching and rev matching (which i am fully capable of)....i need info on how much power people are running through this tranny!!!!

 

the f23 has been in the j-body since 2000. lots of people running plenty of power through them with the gm supercharger kits, turbo kits, nitrous. there have been people putting 400hp though one, i know the hahn turbo sunfire was running over 450hp on a street driven car.

so...how much power exactly can the Getrag F23 tranny handle...hmmz....what about the stock clutch?

 

not sure what the official rating of the f23 is, however i know of a couple j-bodies with 350+hp ecotecs and they are holding strong. the clutch, depends on how you drive it, but for anything more than 200hp id be looking at aftermarket
