gotta love craigslist, the place where nobody will do any work to sell their misrepresented items, and they have an artificially high price because they know people will barter, but then they get pissed cause people are trying to barter.

 

Yeah, and I wasn't even at that point yet. Just trying to see what car he had and what condition the motor is in. I can deal with ignorance, but not a jerk.

 

My experience a lot of times buying stuff from people online they act like they are doing you a favor for even entertaining the thought of selling to you. Many times when asking for a tracking number I get a bunch of BS excuses, like you'll get it when you get it. I let my dogs out in my yard on an electrical fence system so the UPS guy won't deliver if they are outside (they are generally very nice but I have a boxer/lab mix whose hair will spike straight up down her spine and can look pretty scary). They also don't always put the package in the same location every time so if I don't have a tracking number sometimes my package will sit outside for days without me realizing it.

 

Right now I'm dismantling the Miata, so nothing really progressing on the engine. I've got plenty of time to get one. I've been throwing out "Make an Offer" offers for LE5 engines to see if they stick. Most of the listings are WAY overpriced that have the option, but it's been interesting. If you're patient you can get a decent motor shipped for $500. Local recyclers are around that anyways. I'll prob end up getting something local so I can check it out before committing.

When I make the offer I ask if they still have the ECM, BCM, and wire harness.

Listing 1: Buy it now price = $1,050
Offer = $400
Response: $950, "We do not have those modules. The engine is out of the vehicle and in our warehouse. All wires have been cut off at connectors."
I said we were way off on price.

Listing 2: Buy it now price = $800
Offer = $400
Response: $750, "I will not cut my price in half. I can look to see if I have the harness ecm and bcm as well but it will be 750 for the engine sent to your doorstep"
I said don't bother, I can get much cheaper with fewer miles.

If I can get someone to bite for $400 I'll get it on ebay. Otherwise, I'll just keep waiting. I'm also looking on copart for a complete car so that I can snag all of the parts I need (esp engine and body harness). When I first started looking there was an Ion that sold for $550 (so about $800 out the door) which I probably should have just done but I had just started looking and didn't want to be trigger-happy. Everything since has been late model Malibus and Equinoxes that sell for too much (and I miss the auctions). I'll keep waiting

Just need to remove the brake and fuel lines, rest of the exhaust, gas tank, and dash and it's ready to get rid of the tub. Probably get that done April 14 (busy next two weekends). Oh and remove the wire harness.

Took the plunge and bought an LE5 from a 2007 G6 for $430 shipped and includes the wire harness and ECU (and intake mani, etc). I'm not anywhere close to ready for the engine but this was a pretty good deal so I took it. It does have 152K miles, but as long as it's been taken care of I'm not worried. Worst case I can do some work to it. I'll give it a thorough check out (as thorough as I can be without power) once it arrives. I'll pop the valve cover, and spin it a few times manually. I'll also replace the chain and guides since they're likely tired.

 

Can someone do me a favor and check some compatibility? When I bought the engine they said the ECM is available as well, but they had to go look for it. They replied that they "believe" they got the right one, with P/N 12619077. When I google that it shows as a e38 ECM that was used on the 2008+ G6 (not 2007). If I'm doing a standalone setup, are there any compatibility issues if the engine harness is for the e37 (or whatever the 2007 G6 2.4 used) instead of the e38? TIA

 

so before i had a cobalt, lets say 1999 - 2005, i had an Ford Escort. A ford escort either had the wimpy 1.9L or the 1.8L. However if you ordered a 1.8T from across the Pacific, the escort became a monster.

The car i remember during that time period the most was a 1.8L BPT Miata that made 570whp, it was fast as hell, gutted and roll barred, etc.

i post this because that's what any of these kit cars will be, bad ass.

I bought an e67 so this is moot.

The Miata tub comes off on Saturday. All that's left to remove are a brake line, cat back exhaust, and detach the subframes.

Thanks Eddie! It's going to be kinda slow for a bit. The frame will come in about 3-4 weeks. The kit to mate the engine to the trans and subframe could be as long as 8 more weeks. In the meantime I'll work on prepping the engine (compression test first, then deep cleaning). There's also cleaning and painting of the suspension parts. I may try to get CAN hooked up to see just what is on the computer I bought.

 

That's not bad for all the works that will get done but still amazing project

 

Something that we realized while lifting the body (and thankfully before anything tragic happened) is that the load in the straps is dependant on the angle of the straps. If you have two straps holding a 500# weight, and the straps are 30° from horizontal, then the tension load in EACH strap is 500#. If your strap is rated at 400#, you will exceed the capacity by 100#, even though the capacity of both straps together is 300# greater than the weight. Just something to remember when lifting loads.

 

General strap rule of thumb is do not go less than a 45* because of that. Spreader bars can reduce that issue much easier than getting stronger and stronger straps

 

Good point. We grabbed a chain, doubled up the straps, and shifted the attachment points. It's what I had available.

 

I actually watched Mayday or one of those shows on Discovery where they investigate plane crashes. And basically a cargo load was strapped down with improper angles and it broke loose because of it and slid backwards on take off, which took out hydraulic control lines.

Sort of related, I feel like you fellow engineers might appreciate it lol.

 

It's definitely something that can easily be overlooked
