The Phoenix Rises Once More
So, those of you that know me, or at least know of me, know that I am not normal. Hell I probably have something super wrong with my head, after all I've built what I think is the only Cobalt Time Attack car that wasn't handled by John Powell. We have built a team, and have some awesome sponsors that help us out, to build and prove that the Cobalt can and will hold its own vs the Honda Time Attack Fleet in the USA.
Lets go into a little back story on this car.
Purchased Sept 2005. So fresh, so clean.
Engine #1 (Stock L61) Let go back in 2009 with a spun crank bearing at 120,000 miles.
Engine #2 (Junkyard L61) Lasted 14,000 miles before it got more rod knock than.... well, lets just say running 90w in the crank case wouldn't quiet it down.....
Engine #3..... A very nice fully built L61 I picked up off a member on here when I was still in Pittsburgh. It was built for a turbo, and for 2 years I ran it NA (and was sad) Then put a blower on it. Trifecta was super awesome and Steve did a lot of work with us when I moved to SoCal to get us better for Time Attack. But with around 60k on the motor, we did this. and blew a hole thru cylinder #1. I think we had hurt the motor at Super Lap in 2015, but then we went SUPER LEAN at GTA Rd 1 this year and yeah... Melt.
So now......
(DEI makes some AWESOME heat shield)
The Phoenix will be rising again soon, and this build will be absolutely nuts. Doing a few of those "You shouldn't try this, it will be too hard / too much work" and some ridiculous upgrades are coming..... I will be using this thread to tease and post things as we are now getting closer to the motor coming back together......

We run the DEI Titanium Wrap on our long tube and downpipe, its held up amazing well even with getting splashed and whatnot. This is the "DEI Floor and Tunnel Shield 2" its about 1/8" thick, adhesive backed. Super easy to cut with good scissors. We made one big piece for the exhaust tunnel, and then cut and pieced together the firewall so its super neat, and covered the seams with their heat tape.
Nah. Remember that thing I asked about a few months ago that y'all said would be crazy and take too much work to do........

That thing's a beast. With this size of heat exchanger I have always wondered at what capacity does it start not really making a significant difference based on the heat transfer limitations of the stock IM cores. I'd be curious to compare exiting water temps of different heat exchangers.

Pistons come in Wednesday. Ill be picking up the car this weekend to start all the fab. lots to do so I cleared out all the projects I have to make room for this one car. other than some little BS things ill have everything to get the car running. Goal here is to gain 80-100 HP at the same boost level. car will definitely rip. After wat I learned from steves car with raised compression and the HEs I have been building this should easily make 320 ish HP with around 10 PSI of boost.
