I just got a 06 cobalt ss for a cheep price do to it having a "motor issue" I get home and take the valve cover off to see that every rocker arm on the intake side was broke. They were in pieces all on the top of the head. I'm not use to these super charged 2.0 motor I'm more familiar with the older sbc. I was wondering if somebody on here could help me out and give me some advice on what could have caused that and what I would have to do to get it fixed before I start tearing into it.

Every single one? Could have been an over-rev situation. Do you know if the car was stock or tuned?

Over revving is usually the cause. Check the valve springs for breaks. They can be replaced by loosening the camshaft bearing caps evenly across the head a bit at a time till you gain room to pivot them out/in. Then tighten in even small increments. Maybe try sweeping head and valve pockets with a strong magnet also. I just re-read that. Every one? I wonder if it skipped time and the valves met the piston?

Why not just take the cam out completely? Leave it partially in so you don't have to mess with timing or something like that?

I over revved my old 2.2 and it lifted 6 rockers. I did what cw383 did and slowly loosen the cam caps and placed the rockers back under. I put a zip tie on each cam gear so the timing chain did not come off. Take your time and don't rush and you should be good and not have to retime the motor.

Zip tie here is the key. Simple and effective. The reason I said not to remove the cam caps entirely was its way to easy to bump something then the chain may or may not have skipped and it will make you nuts. Zip ties would be perfect.

What if it already slipped time and the intake valves hit the pistons causing the breakage.

I'm betting the valves hitting the pistons broke all the rockers at once.
