3 spoke steering wheel swap on a 2005
first off, yes ive searched, and yes there are a bunch of threads on this, but the info all seems to contradict itself. im hoping for more of a straight answer.
im wanting to swap a 3 spoke steering wheel onto my 2005 ss/sc. more specifically, im wanting to pick up a corvette suede steering wheel and run that. i know the corvette wheel is a direct swap, wiring and all, on a 2007+ car, so im not real concerned on that, im looking for clarity on the 2007+ cobalt wheel onto an 05/06. from what i understand i need the following
steering wheel (in my case corvette)
wheel controls
wiring harness
clockspring (?)
airbag
some of the info says i need to swap the clockspring, other stuff says no. the aftermarket replacement clocksprings say they fit 2005-2010 cobalts, hence my confusion here. i have seen some mention of the dic buttons on the 3 spoke wheel (my dic controls are on the dash), i have seen some mention in threads about making them work, but no real info on how to go about that. im not that concerned about the dic steering wheel buttons, more about cruise control and radio control.
my plan was to keep an eye out at the auto wreckers for a 3 spoke wheel cobalt to grab the steering wheel controls, wiring harness, airbag and clockspring (if needed) from and grab the corvette wheel from ebay. one thing id like clarity on is i know the hhr uses a large wheel, but are the wheel controls and airbag the same? my wreckers gets more higher optioned hhr than cobalts, so it might be a little easier to find the steering wheel controls i need from an hhr.

i ended up finding a leather wrapped 3 spoke wheel at my local pick a part today, complete with full steering wheel controls and a clockspring. they however wouldnt sell me the airbag (they even made a fuss that i brought it into their office, like it was gonna explode) so im trying to track one of them down. im thinking for the time being im just going to put this leather wheel on the car and once i know for sure everything is working ill order up a centennial corvette suede wheel.

i got the 3 spoke wheel put on today. it bolted in as expected without issue. i did not change the clock spring, visually they are identical so i just left my original alone. everything seems to work as expected, aside from one thing.
i have a metra/axxess steering wheel control module for my aftermarket deck, ive always had issues with volume down turning the volume up (it always programmed ok). initially the controls sort of worked, only volume up worked properly, volume down didnt work and other buttons were random. i couldnt seem to program the volume down to work at all, and upon further testing i found it wasnt working at all, and that the buttons have been taken apart before.
so because i needed the radio controls i ordered a suede centennial corvette wheel, cause it comes with those switches lol.
