urgent suggestion for sale section

looks like members are starting to use other members pictures to scam people with. ie:

https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/parts-66/winkdogydog101-using-other-members-pics-216845/

a simple way to fix this would be for any part being sold, to require a handwritten paper with their username and date in the picture of the part.

that one dude is using my build thread pictures, it needs to be stopped before more people get scammed and is a super easy/no hassle fix

You could take this a step further. Pictures required with sign as said and moderator approval before thread is shown to public.

Another suggestion is to charge a small fee, or require premium membership to post in for sale section if below 1,500 posts or 6 months of being of forums. Most people won't stick around or pay to scam people. This is how it was done on the G35 forums and I felt completely safe buying stuff over there.
Yup, thats how the Miata guys do it, have to be a paying member to post.

I think maybe we should just start using the pictures w/ username and see how it goes.

I've been on forums that had similar requirements, its a great idea. I also like the idea of threads being approved first. The pic + username is a good requirement but I don't think that this forum even **requires** pics to be posted.

Just buy stuff the smart way, dont gift people money over paypal, and get a tracking number. And i agree with the hand written paper in the thread idea. But paying to post in the classifieds is ridiculous. I would totally pay for css.net if it was reliable and wasnt down once a day.

If you can't afford that, you clearly can't afford the parts you are trying to buy.
I gotcha, well then something needs to happen so people stop getting screwed on here. i guess the premium membership thing should happen then.

I'm with the folks saying that you need to have a few posts first. Perhaps 40-50 post, before you can sell. Or a special registration, that may take a day to approve, to make users a "registered seller", before they can sell goods.

I sell computer parts up here, and I think these scammers are bad for business!

How about you have to have a verified paypal account?

Just because they don't scam people on eBay doesn't mean they won't scam us though

i've already suggested over two years ago to have like a rating system like ebay. but to make it full proof that way someone who has a grudge against you wont completely trash your percentage.

I had ALL of this info from a premium member with over 1,000 posts who even wrote their username on paper in the picture AND I still got scammed.

That’s just it. You never know the other side.
Per our site rules:
It is strongly recommended that you use C.O.D. or an online escrow service.
It is also a good idea to use a credit card whenever possible. They are very good at refunding money for any reason.

Now all that being said, I don’t think that having this paper in the pictures will hurt anything and I don’t mind making it mandatory if members wish to do so. I certainly do not want to limit the classified section only to premium members. That’s just not a good idea.

If you have less then 1500 post OR been a member for less then 12 months; then you must pay a small $5 fee or become premium to access the classifieds.

If you are over 1500 posts or 12 months, then you will be allowed to view them for no fee.

It would basically prevent any one from just signing up and spamming.
I read what you wrote, and what I wrote about Premium had nothing to do with that. It had to do with PMs I received.

Anyways, about charging a fee that’s out of the question as well. Craigslist does not charge a fee just because you are new to craigslist. Buyer beware. And if you are not comfortable buying from a new member, no one is forcing you to buy from them. Only buy when you feel reasonably comfortable.

i like that idea, but what about people like me. I am on here daily because i read the content and learn alot but do not post alot but try to sell legitametly and will never scam a person. I think alot of people buying are going to only buy if they know the person is seriously legit from others testaments. i think for now having their name on a peice of paper with pictures will work and if possible people should pay with a credit card or cash in person. i hate that it makes it hard for people like me to sell because we cant trust anyone any more.

You can't stop all of it so you wont do anything about it?

I don't see why someone joining up just to hock crap is a benefit to this forum at all. I think you shouldn't be allowed to post in the FS section until you have been here one year / 1000 posts. Whats wrong with a little addidtional protection for members? I believe 100% you should require photos no exceptions at least, preferably with the username and date. If it strains you current staff, expand

So we should not allow this guy to sell his cars cuz he’s new?

I didn’t say I was not going to do anything at all FYI.
