Need help timing my lnf

Tried to fix it my self bad move lol now I need to re time it anyone know how

YelloEye 05-01-2013 09:23 PM

The timing chain should have 3 colored links on it, these correspond to appropriate teeth on the cams and crank gears. Or at least that's how it is on an L61, the LNF should be similar but I can't pull up the service books right now.

ssdivin 05-01-2013 09:28 PM

I got that part I'm not sure how to move the chain and do I just put it to tdc take off gears move chain and put them back on At 10 and 2

YelloEye 05-01-2013 09:36 PM

You need to make sure it's correct on the crank too though. You have to release the timing chain tensioner and then move the chain to the correct spots. You shouldn't have to remove the gears at all, though removing the guide between the two cams can help position the chain easier.

Found this https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-0l...-marks-221389/

ItalianJoe1 05-01-2013 10:29 PM

The gears are only going to go onto the cams in one position, you have to turn the cams to appx the right spot, then put the chain on and line everything up exactly before putting in the tensioner and locking it all in place. It's been a little bit since i've done one but the engine doesn't want to hold the cams perfectly on line, you will have to move them to position and set them while holding a little tension on one of them, I think it's the exhaust. Once all the marks are there, if everything moves back a little before you set the tensioner it's not a problem, just make sure that the marks are all still on time after you get the tensioner installed, and roll the motor over once or twice by hand to make sure everything spins freely (always go clockwise on the crank pulley, never rotate the engine the wrong way, very easy for it to jump timing at this point).

ssdivin 05-01-2013 10:45 PM

That is making me understand better just turn the cam bolt untill the gear is in right spot with the chain off,
Will the bottom one spin easy and there is not much slack in the chain even with tensioner out, is it the upper chain guide ?

YelloEye 05-01-2013 11:49 PM

Motor will spin freely without the spark plugs in it. Should be able to spin it by hand, if more pressure is needed you're probably contacting a valve somewhere.

ssdivin 05-02-2013 12:11 AM

Ok now that sounds bad I can't turn it by hand I haven't tried with the tensioner out would that make it hard to turn the timing chain is still on I had to use w wrench on crank bolt to get it to tdc it was hard

ItalianJoe1 05-02-2013 12:47 PM

With the chain on you will need a wrench to turn it, he's talking about just the crank without the chain. And even at that, with the balance shafts and water pump there's still some resistance. It should turn smoothly and without any uneven resistance. The cams will be harder to spin as they push the valves down against the spring pressure, so that's normal.

ssdivin 05-02-2013 01:00 PM

Ok good I was trying to take the chain off its still tight I took off the upper guide is there a trick

YelloEye 05-02-2013 07:16 PM

Did you remove the timing chain tensioner?

Powell Race Parts 05-02-2013 07:27 PM

you cant reliably time an LNF without a work shop manuil and the timing chain cam gear holder. You also have to drop the pass side of the engine down, and remove the crank pulley and timing cover. The links match up to the gears, BUT without the tool you wont be able to get them to align. You engage the inlet cam with the link matched to the gear marks ( tool in place, you then engage the chain and colored link to the crank pulley at 5 o clock, and then put the chain on the ex cam ; as you do so the crank will turn to 6 oclock and make you think you are wrong. You are not.
SO: You have:
NO service Manual?
NO service cam gear locking tool?
You have
BIG problem. tears will results and you will become very poor very quickly.

ssdivin 05-02-2013 08:23 PM

Ok let me track that stuff down

I did it with just hand tools and a service manual on my buddy's cammed L61, turned out alright ;) I'm sure the cam gear locking tool would have been real useful though.

Dibs on wtv I can use for my cobalt

ssdivin 05-02-2013 09:14 PM

Lol I won't touch it more till I find someone who knows what they are doing

very good plan. sorry to be so direct, but its easy to screw up, and hard to pay for the results if they dont work out.

ps there is always someone who has done it better using zip ties and jbweld.

ssdivin 05-02-2013 09:33 PM

Lol it seemed easy but quickly got out of hand is this the right part

ssdivin 05-02-2013 10:12 PM

Who knows the part number

ssdivin 05-02-2013 10:19 PM

Wow not very cheap lol

Powell Race Parts 05-02-2013 10:21 PM

repair valves and pistons, replace chain and tensioner? lots more than that. good luck with your nightmare. sad to say.
