Texas Emissions question

Anyone in TX have a hahn (or any other turbo) on their cobalt and pass inspection, or have problems?

As long as you don't throw CELs and have a cat I think that's all that matters. They don't pipe sniff us, just check for codes.

Would it be different than sukxost, since I am thinking of swapping blowers, and not just upgrading parts around a stock turbo?

Anybody know if they do actual pipe sniffing in Houston (Harris or Montgomery County)? I moved here too recently to have had to get an inspection here yet.

I should have watched the last time I got it inspected on whether or not they sniff the pipe... If I get inspected before I am able to get the money together for a swap, I will watch and see exactly how its done

Anyone working at a dealer or other shop know for sure?

they only use the "sniffer" on 95 and older vehicles...96 and newer they have a plug that goes into your OBD port and reads your pcm ...which is why your CEL cant be on.

*evil voice* Excellent...

I didn't know that. So basically, if it looks like you've got cats (or even if you don't) you can pretty much pass that with just an O2 CEL wipe?

yes...i have a club member here in austin with an lsj with the hahn exhaust catless..he got the 02 deleted by trifecta..i then was able to pass his state inspection....however i WILL tell you the "02 sensor not ready" WILL show up on the test but as long no more than one show up it will still pass..if you have to delete other codes in order to keep your CEL off it may be in vain since the deleted codes make the monitors show up as not ready .....and if you have an 08 or 09 car then your real lucky cus no matter where you live cars only 2 years old get a safety inspection only...no emissions required

no they only use the pipe sniffer on 95 down like section8cav said. if your not running a cat turn off your cel with hpt and they will never know unless they check which most likely they wont.

I remember reading something about this while waiting at my dealer one day. If you take your car into the dealer for a CEL for instance, and they clear the CEL, what would make it say "___ READY" again after that?... or would it never say that again after the initial CEL delete?

there are "monitors" in your pcm...they check like 4 or 5 things...EVAP,o2,o2heater,catalyst ,etc.
anytime you erase a CEL..like with a regular scanner or even unplug the battery for that matter it erases all stored temporary monitor memory, and the pcm monitors must start over...this takes a few miles to do...anywhere from 20-100 depending on conditions.......if you were to get your car inspected after unplugging your batter or erasing a cel then the state computer would ready "NOT READY" all your monitors...this would equal a FAIL. and you get no sticker till you come back and they are ready. when you DELETE a CEL code with HPT(or the like) then that particular monitor will ALWAYS read "not ready"
the state allows for a maximum of TWO to still be "not ready" and still pass the car

So what do people do when they clear an O2 CEL? It sounds like they either have to clear it with a "normal" scanner and drive it off for a while or if the use HPT, then it will be forever messed up...

What constitutes a "normal" scanner though, and why does it reset on those and not HPT?

thats exactly what you have to do...if a car has a CEL on, and i fix the problem, then erase the code with a typical scanner i then have to drive the car a MINIMUM of 20 miles before inspecting it, otherwise it will be "not ready" and fail ..after 20miles or so there is a better chance most of them will have gone ready.
as for hpt your confusing "erasing a cel" with DELETING a code ...with a normal scanner you simply turn the "light"off....if the problem isnt fixed the light will simply come back on.....when you go in with hpt and delete the code altogether then that monitor simply will not run anymore and always show up "not ready"...but the light will also never come on for that particular code either, cus you deleted it :P ...get me ?

bumping from the past, but can you UN-DELETE a code (e.g. - 02 sensor for catless DP) on HPT so that you can clear it with a scanner and drive the 20 or so miles so that it will be in a "READY" state?

Well I prob have the 02 sensor as "Not Ready" since my tuner turned off the code for the rear 02 sensor for the downpipe.

From what you said then, that code would always say, "Not Ready" even if I put back on the stock downpipe.

I have my stock ECU as well that I could swap, I'd prob have to do a drive cycle to get all the sensors to go into "Ready" mode I assume.

Correct?

Would I pass emissions with a single "Not Ready" code and that being the Rear 02 sensor as "not ready"?

Texas has a "three strikes, you're out" system. Only one Not Ready is fine.
