A buddy and I are planning on driving out this year to watch. We were looking into getting a camping pass to stay on the mountain the night before.

I figure there are a few active people on the forum in Colorado that may have gone to this before. Any advice as far as what campsite to stay at or general tips would be awesome.

I'm not on facebook. I was expecting there to be a few people on here that had gone in the past. As long as it doesn't rain or something I probably won't have a bad time, so it's not a huge deal.

 

Pike National Forest is open to dispersed camping. IDK if you are into back country camping like that, but it's the freeist way to camp.

There are a million state parks in the area. I stayed at Cheyenne Mt. which is 20 miles south of pikes entrance. It was great, besides the damn army base playing reveille every morning.

 

This ended up being pretty fun. We ended up staying at ski area and then moving up to devil's playground early in the morning (2:30am). Apparently as recently as one or two years ago, anyone could spectate from pretty much wherever they wanted, which would make for some awesome pictures. Now there are limited areas where people can watch from. The top half of the course ended up getting snowed out around noon, but it wasn't actually that cold or windy, so it was still a pretty good time.








To anyone in Colorado that hasn't driven on highway 139, I would definitely recommend it. Big open stretches, good views, steep switchbacks, etc.
