If you catch Sunset at the right time it usually is wide open up until Hollyhood. I do not know where you all are coming from, but when I came from the North I would take Ventura to the 405 and it wasn't too bad. Glendale has some interesting places, and plenty of parking garages.
Another idea is in front of the Playboy mansion on Charing Cross Rd. If you want to bear some of the traffic with Hollyhood you could cruise over Mt. Olympus in Hollywood Hills. Some nice views and houses/landscapes.

No you can definitely park in front, its a public street. I have been by there a few times when I was working in Chatsworth. Don't ask what I used to do in Chatsworth though
