It is 2:15 a.m. as I post this, and I will be there, lol. Finished washing the car (it was BAD, I let it go during the winter 'cuz what's the point), so now I can see all the imperfections in the paint. Grr... Road salt on my UT trips fucked up my headlight paint job too.

Yes, I ran a 14.8, 100% stock (even the air filter) with a sub-perfect 2.3xx 60' on the stock Dunlop SP9000's. Was ~85 degrees out, too. At sea level with a perfect stock-tire launch and reasonably cool air these cars can do 14.2 - 14.3 @ 98 mph; capable of 14.5 or so here.

The Ion's are EVER so slightly faster than the SS/SC 'balts all else being equal; we weigh like 60 lbs less and have smaller, lighter wheels. That's about it - 1 or 2 10ths in the quarter, tops. If i wasn't afraid of the axles, I would be way faster, too - that was the 1st time I've ever taken this car down the track (okay, 2nd - but actual 1st time doesn't count, driver side axle snapped at the line on my first run, lol). I been racing for a looong time, I don't suck, lol. I still have to this day the fastest 1/4 ever made in a bone-stock 2.4 liter manual tranny Grand Am at 15.9 @ 86 mph here - 2100 ft with an N/A motor. Beat GM's test drivers in that same car by just over a 10th, and they were at 1800 ft lower elevation. [/bragging]

big brother i dont understand, ok i hope you guys dont talk ****, cause i do know how to drive and i know how to run the 1/4 mile...but the BEST time ive EVER gotten in my cobalt is a 14.9 with a 3.1 r/t...with a stage 2 kit, intake and 100 octane fuel...i just dont understand, i actually went to the dealership and told them that my cars f*&ked up lol, then they gave me the schmeel about the altitude and all that crap, ive been so unsatisfied with my car since the first day ive bought it GRRR since then ive dynoed it and they said everything was ok with it..hmmm...havent ran it since then, im gonna take it out next time the tracks open

 

idk. my cuz knows how to drive it. sure hell lose in a drag race but if we cruise the canyon, he can work that **** to keep up.

 

Do u have any mods 4 traction?? Torque dampner, different mounts?? Also what tires are u running?? What rpm do u launch??

 

i decided to keep the balt. She may not be worth anything and costing too much(but the payments are fine...) but I didn't feel the solara... just not for me i guess. lol

 

no i dont have any mods for that, but what im saying is all the research ive done for my car says it should run better than that stock, i launch at about 2500-3000, and my car just sits there and bounces lol, i hate it!, and the tires were the stock pirellis

 

U need some different tires and at least a torque dampner....ur getting wheel hop. Watch hopping to much u can mess up ur drive shafts and tranny. Are u easing off the throttle when u shift?? And yes our elevation and our temp does play a factor here. Ive had the same problem. I'll have to go to mayhem with u 1 time lol.

 

stapes - I don't wanna come off as an ass, but your post kinda indicates you're fairly new to 1/4 mile racing. Firstly - you can't have a 3.1 r/t. If you lagged at the line that long, you'd a red light, lol. I think you mean your 60' - which indicates that you don't know how to launch all that well (it's a learning curve man, we all had to do it) and these cars are HARD to launch even for 'experts'. The fact that you don't recognize wheelhop for what it is sorta reinforces the fact that you're reletively new to the game.

That said - if you managed a 14.9 with that horrid of a launch (and a 3.1 is BAD; a 2.1 is your target on street tires and a 2.2 to 2.3 is an accomplishment with these cars), your car is good for well into the 13's with a proper launch. Your mods supoort this; with that list you should be in the mid to high 13's well driven with a good launch.

A word of advice - bone stock, these cars launch best FROM IDLE. With 40+ HP over stock, launching at 2500-3000 rpm = death to your axles and tranny. You're lucky they've held so far, to be honest. Slip the clutch out while gradually rolling into the throttle off the line. the tires will spin, so be easy on the gas and feel what they're doing - increase throttle gradually to keep them barely past grip. Very little of 1st gear is in WOT at all. Shift into 2nd as fast as you know how but don't go WOT right away - roll into it quickly though and give it hell as the tires hook better. With your mods at this altitude with a proper launch, you should trap right near redline in 3rd at just over 100 mph (you have stage kits so you have a 7k redline, yes? If no, there will be a bummer shift to 4th right before the finish that'''l cost you a 10th or more).

Nice meeting a few of you this morning! Maybe next time more people will show and more people can hang longer. 3 IRL's and 3 Cobalts is our best turnout yet though, lol.
