Not really, Modesto is like the worst place to live in norcal... It has 9 time the US average for crimes per mile, and is in the bottom 3% of cities in the US.

Any reccomendatiins on surrounding areas? I see Manteca was one recommended! It's like trying to pick the best if the worst I guess! I found some gated communities in Modesto that seem safe.

2nd Manteca its much better then Modesto.

Go to Trulia.com and click on the "Stats & Trends" tab at the top, then enter different zip codes in the area.
It gives you really good info that I'm sure will help you decide.
