Run in with the CHP... advice on "getting legal"

Soooooo. Got pulled over tonight for out of state tags, out of state license, excessive acceleration ( i left a green light too fast) and too loud an exhaust. Cop was awesome at trying to intimidate me and threatening to arrest me.

But so, Im gonna go get my CA drivers license (easy)

Anyone know of lick and stick places around Carson / Hawthorne? Car has a built motor, and a catless dp and exhaust atm. If i can pay it thru smog, will it still pass the DMV inspection? Anything for that i should worry about?

Thinking i may ditch the catless dp and beat up GMPP exhaust this winter and goto a high flow cattted zzp dp and a 2.5" ZZP exhaust.. thoughts? input? Ideas?

Only way I can think is to know someone, I'm going cat less and not worrying about it since a friend does inspections and says he can pass anything he wants to.

Those cops in CA are the only ones worse than the NY ones it seems.

There are a lot of shops around your area. Ask Eurocode tuning to see if they know someone like that.

I just picked up a zzp 2.5" catback and it's every bit as good as all the reviews (check out riceburners) say it is. Quality of it is amazing, didn't even want to put it under a car it was so nice. And it's litterally barely louder than the factory exhaust (idling in the driveway 9/10 people would thin kits stock), has a nice grumble upto 2500 or so without being loud, and has a nice roar over that when you open it up.

I picked it up to replace my magnaflow 3" catback because it was way too loud (getting hassled as well), and its absolutely perfect. I have it behind a vibrant 4-2-1 header and their 2.5" catted dp. Wouldnt change anything if I could

There's no law against excessive acceleration. If your tires never lost traction, you're fine.

And good to hear on the exhaust. i think once my control arm gets fixed that exhaust is next.

If you can get her to pass smog the dmv will most likely let it through but you gotta know somebody or be ready to fork over 150+$ to pass her.. Cause the dmv not going to look under the car to see if you have a cat. that's what the smog inspection is for! AS far as too loud of an exhaust was it measured with a DB meter? IF not that's going to get thrown out! AS well as excessive acceleration as long as you didnt spin it SHOULD get thrown out too!

ok cause military can keep their license and plates. Without changing them to the state you live in.

how long have u been in CA? I am in law enforcement and I know PA laws are different but if ur living in PA for more than 60 days you are considered a resident and have to get a PA drivers/identification card. and the whole car transfer over etc.

So quick question. If I were in the military and have a pa drivers license but my car was registered in ca..is that against the law in pa? Serious question though because my wife had this issue and the cop that had pulled her over told her she could get a huge fine

My friend has a NSRT4 that has the window thing on it in the rear saying his car is registered in Colorado. He's had that for a couple of months now and nobody has said anything to him. In fact he gets away with stuff because cops in my area don't know anything about the Colorado Laws lol.

I also had my Washington license plate on for a month or so after I got the car home from Vegas and no cop ever stopped me for anything.

so are you living in pa?

it all depends on the state. Usually if u have a permant address and are receiving mail in a certain area then u are considered a resident. If u have a job and u will be paying taxes u are considered a resident and then u should change over ur registration (plate). and all that good stuff.

some states allow u to keep a plate. for example if u live in pa for 6 months and florida for another 6 months. that is confusing as all heck but, u are basically a resident in both states. so keeping one plate is ok. which is confusing bc PA state law states 60 days in the commonwealth living here and working considers u as a resident.

There are so many loop holes its crazy

yea there are so many out of state plates it is crazy. But if ur buddy does get stopped and has a current and valid PA license than the officer should ask why the car is registered in Colorado and how long he has been living/working in PA. If the officer can prove (or ur buddy says longer than 60 days) which can be easily proven by the issue date of his license then the officer can issue him a citation. And then if your buddy hurries up and switches his plate to PA and gets all that taken care of b4 the hearing, hopefully it will get dismissed bc he took the actions to make sure he was legal in PA.

My wife went back to pa for a week and a half then moved to Virginia for her duty station. But while she was there she was threatened with a big fine....last time I checked if you are active duty military those kinds of laws don't affect you until you get out and are living there permanently.

I know I'm active duty and currently live in Texas with Cali plates on my car. I own a house in Texas, and am still a resident of CA and I still don't have to change my plates/license. My license actually expired in 2011, but by Cali law I don't have to renew it since I'm AD and stationed outside of my state of residence. I actually got pulled over the other day (41 in a 30), and explained it all to the cop and it was seamless. Mainly because I had the documentation I needed justifying my expired license and what not.

get two v-band flanges welded in your downpipe, have a straight pipe and a cat with 2 vbands on both of them, swap in as needed. pass smog and as long as you have your evap system still you'll pass in CA in problem
