Tint!
Tint!
Apperantly I can't have it. I got pulled over this morning and was give a fix-it ticket. They gave me 30 days to remove it on my passenger and driver side windows. I've had it for a over a year now. Why didn't the tinting store tell me?
I know the tint place wont just put illegal tint on for you without you asking. Down here you have to pay in cash for illegal tint and most places write it as getting a "graphic" put on. If you never asked for illegal tint and in fact it is... make the tint place pay that ticket and redo your tint legally. Most have a lifetime warranty, does yours?
it's your responsibility to know the laws. good luck trying to get the tint place to pay your ticket. usually they have warnings up around the tint place but occasionally you'll find some that don't. tint your windows at your own risk. just a fix it ticket, nothing major but it's a pain to take that stuff off your windows.

according to the officer and what i've been reading in the states tint laws is that the passenger and driver windows are off limits period. had i known that i wouldn't have done it, but i dont have a problem taking it off. i dont remember if i signed a liability waiver though, if i did, im not fighting it. if i didn't. then they (the place i got tinted) will pay my ticket.
alright i will tell u guysexactly how it is and trust me i know wat im talking about. Any tint in the state of california on the driver or passanger window is illegal. U r not going to be able to get the tint shop to pay ur ticket. it is tint at ur own risk and it is not illegal for THEM to tint them that dark if thats wahat U for? Get it? I'm sorry man our laws suck but it's a fix it ticket, get the tint off and pay 10 dollars is all u have to do. If the place u got them done at is good like my sponsor who does mine they might take it off for free. there is a trick using a black trash bag and heat and they might re tint them after ur ticket is signed off for cheap if u want it done. idk thats wat my shop does for me.
Lol. I have 5% tint all the way around. The guy didnt say anything and i paid with my debit. Perhaps if there is a sign somewhere there they dont have to tell you. But im sure there is some kind of "dont ask dont tell" policy with them...lol But i knew it was illegal before i had it done. Im pretty sure in Cali its like 30%, which is pretty much nothing.
Here's something i did in court once...go to the dealer and find a car identical to yours without tint, take a picture of it and go into court...worked like a charm for me
Now that's just a temporary fix because if that cop sees you out again he will give a ticket for sure.

Yes and no on tint on the front windows. There's a couple sections in the vehicle code that contradict each other. You technically can have a very light tint on the front windows, but you need to keep in mind that modern factory glass already has a tint, so if you add a tint the same as the limit you'll probably be over if inspected and checked with a light meter (there's actually some European cars that have a chemical tint in the glass from the factory that would technically be illegal).
The intent of the tint law was to protect officers when they approach a vehicle they stop. Besides getting hit by other vehicles when stopped on the side of the road, many, many officers have been shot by people in cars. Imagine walking up to a car at night in a not so nice area and not know who is inside and what they're doing. Nearly all stops like that where an officer has been shot have started as a routine traffic stop where they didn't know a criminal was inside that car who had just killed someone, knocked over a store, etc. (This is also one reason they now approach from the passenger side so they have a better chance to make sure you don't have a gun.)
If you put a limo tint on your car in California it is only a matter of time until you get stopped and if you're lucky you'll only get hit with a fix-it ticket and have to strip the tint off. If you're adding the tint just for appearance reasons that's the price you'll have to pay. If you want tint to keep interior temps down keep the total light transmission (including the glass) to legal limits. There's a chance you could get ticketed under one of the other sections of the vehicle code but you'd be able to fight it and should win (but ask if it will be worth your time and money to fight is the question to ask yourself).
If you're less interested in tint just to make your windows look dark and just want to help keep interior temps down and block harmful UV rays 3M Corporation has a nice new tint product. Their Crystalline family of tint dramatically cuts out UV and infrared rays. There's info on the product here, here, here and here. SCC mag also did a short article about it recently and shows some of the real world results.

I just avoid getting pulled over. Usually.
That's good advice but if a local PD or county pulls you over because they saw the tint you'll be rolling the windows back up. Heard of that happening many times to people who have done the same thing.
