Control arms and ball joints

So went to the local tire shop to get a tire the other day and had them check my brakes. Since I had the car it always felt rough slowing down the steering wheel would shake and it was almost like the brakes would catch and let go. turns out I need control arms and ball joints well the place wants 600 for the parts and labor a friend told me I could get them for about a 150 a pop and install myself. I just want to make sure i'm getting the right stuff i am by no means a car wize I have a 2007 chevy cobalt L . If someone also knows where some step by step instructions are I would be greatly appreciative.

Yeah you pretty much only need new control arms after a serious curb hit or car collision

Sounds like a good reason to upgrade to lighter, stronger CA's and get the ball joints for free to me. But make sure they are 05-07 FE5's if you want to go the easy route. And a nice torque wrench with an angle finder and a lift wouldnt hurt either.
But yes 150 something each, some time and a good learning experience sounds about right.
