Help! Steering crunching/loose!

Recently car has been on the downhill slope towards it's inevitable replacement but has recently developed a "crunching" sound when you're turning the wheel. It makes a crunching sound every time you turn the wheel. I've also noticed that where the steering was formally tight I now have quite some play in the wheel. Meaning I have to turn the wheel 30 degrees in either direction to get it to do just about anything.

Any thoughts as to what could cause this. Don't want to dump any kind of money into this, just need to know what I could be looking at.

Looking for replacements for it though, any suggestions?

A crunching noise sounds like a broken clock spring, but that wouldnt affect your steering issues. The steering intermediate shaft or steering rack going bad can cause a sloppy steering wheel

Broken clock spring, is that something to be worried about or is it fine for now?

As for the immediate shaft, is it something that would need immediate replacement or can I push it off while I look for a new vehicle.

BUMP.

Still looking for options here. Any other thoughts? I have about a half turn of play (1/4 to left and 1/4 to right) before any kind of steering takes place.

Needs opinions!

If u have that much play then i wouldnt be waiting to fix it. Take your drivers side wheel off and watch the intermediate shaft move the steering rack as someone else turns the steering wheel. You will be able to see what is making it so sloppy. You can also check the joint thats inside the car right above your feet

Help! Steering crunching/loose!

Sounds like a broken steering rack or an intermediate shaft with bad joints
