LSJ Rear Beam Axle - same as standard cobalt minus the stub axles?

Hi all,

I have a picture of a rear beam axle here from a standard cobalt SS. Basically I need just the metal bar that runs between the stub axles.

Are all beam axles the same, minus the bolt on stub axles on both sides? Cant seem to find this information anywhere.

as long as the axle beam has rear disk brakes, they are all the same. same bolt pattern and everything

rustledjimmies 03-30-2012 11:27 AM

Supposedly the welds are different thanks to our scientists here on css.net

But I should be able to take my spindles off my existing beam and bolt it up to a LS beam, correct?

ufff i asked to do that to with an ls beam as well, and they told me its super complicated. they told me it doesnt bolt on, you have to cut and weld everything to put all the lsj spindles, rotors, brakes, etc on it. they said it was a pain in the ass and theres no room for failure. im probably in the same position you are. i said fuck that, decided to wait and look for an actual rear axle with disk brakes, and my friend found me one in a junkyard locally. and guess what! it was almost brand freaking new, with brand new rotos, and brand new brake pads. $175 and they shipped it to my house for free. i was amazed. dealer wanted like $1400

Yeah, thats the situation Im in now. One side of the beam is bent, and they are like $500 used. Ive got LS beams here and my spindles and brakes are good. I just need the stupid beam part.

Here are pictures of the Beam axle from a 2.2 LS. But I have no clue what an SS looks like, as mine is under my car, immobilized.

how did you manage to twist a beam?

Sox-Fan 03-31-2012 12:07 AM

The LNF beam has a sway bar welded inside of it. I don't know if the LSJ one does or not, if so I don't know if the diameter is the same. That LS one seems to not have it, at least near as I can tell by the pictures.

bluebalt07 03-31-2012 01:19 AM

All the cobalts have a rear sway bar but the ss ones are bigger, LNF's being the biggest from what I understand. I also read in another thread on here that the LNF one is not interchangeable with the other models. You really should find one with rear disc brakes though to make the swap as simple as possible

Sox-Fan 03-31-2012 01:41 AM

Also Mini STSV it would really be easier for us to help you if you put what kind of car you have into your garage or your signature.

all cobalt beams have a weld in bar. LNF is largest, LSJ next smaller as already detailed here, and the ls lt drum brake cars are smaller weld in still, without the ears welded on for rear disc calipers. I have a disc brake conversion plate for drum brake cars, at 235 + u supply disc brake parts.... Its pretty simple here, and most of the posters here have it right, add a genuine Powell hardcore bar to any of these beams and your handling will improve.
/end shameless plug....

Do you have any other pictures of the disc brake conversion plate? Couldnt I technically just bolt up my disc brakes to a drum brake rear beam?

Sox-Fan 03-31-2012 11:09 AM

No, drum brake beams don't have the ears for the two caliper bolts, thus the conversion plate.

Mini STSV 04-01-2012 11:09 AM

yes, but the cost of $235 for a "disc brake conversion plate" would be more than the price difference between an LS and SS axle.

Mini STSV 04-02-2012 08:33 AM

So is the only difference between the SS/SC and SS/TC rear axle the larger sway bar?

Crav3 04-28-2012 04:52 AM

is there a pic of the "conversion plate"?

Powell Race Parts 04-28-2012 06:28 AM

dont do pictures to facilitate copies, sorry. we do the engineering and research and provide the parts to make it easy, not free.
