1989 cavy z24 vs. 06 ss/sc

well tonight i was beaten by a 1989 z24. i know many of you are probably asking yourselves "is that possible, is this guy a moron?"

the asnswer is yes it is possible, and yes i am a moron. it started with him behind me in a left turn lane and i wasnt really sure he wanted to race but i kept the rpms high anyways. ya know just in case. and sure enough he flips on his turn signal to pass and gets right up next to me. i nail it at like 4 and a half grand in 2nd........then he walks on me to about a car and a half up to 100mph....wtf!?

atfer losing i flagged the dude down and asked him what the hell he modded because i know they have a 2.8 n/a stock and i believe they put down numbers close to the 2.4 ss's. but he didnt have the 2.8 at all, he switched it out for a 3.4L from a 02 alero. also with a couple other things like exhaust, CAI, and a flywheel. needless to say it was fast and caused me much shame. they guy ended up being pretty cool though and knew pretty much everything there is to know about anything jbody/delta platform. so its all good guess. im just glad i didnt talk any head before the race!

The 2.8 had 128HP and the 3.1 had 140HP, the 3400 has 160HP. My 1993 Z24 ran a best time of 15.8 with a K&N filter and exhaust.

With that being said I think he had much more done than just that, 160HP in a J-Body isn't going to eat a 240HP SS/SC.

The 3.4 from the Alero is rated at 170hp and 200 lb/ft... You sure it wasn't the 3.4 from a late 90's Monte Carlo? Those were rated at 215hp and 220 lb/ft.... closer to SS/SC territory.

Did he have a manual tranny conversion done too? That engine in the Alero/GA carried those heavy cars to high 15s. An early J-car like that would weigh approx 500lbs less. You would be easily in the 14s before mods.

Stock vs stock, there is no comparing the older Z24 and new SS. I've owned both a manual and auto 90 Z24 with the 3.1 and they have oodles of power down low but run out of breath at 4000rpm.

Do you know how much that particular J-body weighed? There are plenty of cars that have 160hp that will eat a "240hp" SS/SC.

i'd probably own you all... lol

But yeah, my 3.4 liter that used to be in my car gave me 15.702@88mph with the automatic.... and the Grand Am isn't that heavy it weighed 3144 pounds at weight in before that race

Now it weighs 2856 pounds with my turbo Ecotec swap(the V-6 with the iron block weighs a ton... and that hydramatic tranny weighed more than the Getrag i swapped in too)

engine swaps are cool to an axtent...... just because you can put a hot engine in a slow car.
**** dude who cares tho
I could make the baddest cobalt ever, just redo everything on the car and drop in a ls2, and throw a blowwer on it for good measure....you wanna see something unbeatable...there you go.

The only cars with 160hp that will be hanging with SS/SC's aren't really cars there shells with a seat, engine and transmission.

There is this local guy with a completely stripped civic that weighs like 1,800lbs with a full tank of gas.

He trys to race everyone in full bodied cars with close to the same hp then acts as if the win means anything.

alright alright dudes.... just jokin around a little, but again i was only trying to point out the fact that the 3.4 could get an old car like that running some pretty good times with some decent mods and manual tranny.... lol damn... and i just ran some guy with a lightly modded Cobalt SS/SC this morning and he stayed pretty even with me..... i wonder what he had?

Oh yes it would. The manual tranny would be about 1/2 second faster than an auto if the guy can drive.

What did you do for mods to get it to 200hp? That's a solid 30hp gain over stock.

The 02 3400 put down 160/tq and 140/hp to the wheels, right on with their specs.

My blown 02 w/full exhaust put down only 200 whp and 210 tq
