cobalt ls vs. 04 cavy
The LS isn't exactly what I call slow. I mean hell, I've driven rental cars that I get from the people's insurance that keep HITTING ME. Ugh. Anyways I'm talkin Chevy Aveo, Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent. You know, the cheapest cars the insurance can find and I (average build guy) can't even fit into comfortably, talk about econobox.... When you've driven those the LS is a world of difference. But yeah just for reference, EVERY race is a driver's race. Same thing I told to the Saleen Mustang that I raced (first race, thought I was a badass, really wasn't) that lost because he jacked up second gear (and I mean jacked, he fell waaaayyyyy back). Having 260hp helps but it's not always necessary. Race things you can actually beat and you stand a chance, assuming you can drive. You are right about one thing though, speed and HP are really nice, which is the reason I'm getting a Camaro this summer :-)

I've been lusting for a camaro for a while, what year and type?
telling a cobalt owner with a lower model balt then urs not to race his because its too slow is pretty pathetic. Buy a used ls for 8k, drop in around 2k for a nice turbo kit, tada, on par with an ss/tc for speed.
Put a stage 3 zzp turbo on my 2.4 and say bye to most tc's and still much cheaper.
I love tc's love to get one, but some of you owners are wayyyy full of yourselfs

We're not full of ourselves, I appoligize If I made any ss/tc owners look like jackasses really, its just I hate people complaining how they used a non performance model and then talk about getting spanked. And by the way let me know where I can get a "nice" turbo kit for 2k. And the stage 3 zzp kit will be an overkill for an LS model, no forged internals, stock clutch?
And OP once again I appoligize for my comments, just trying to state that if you want performance, you got to buy performance. For what LS is its a nice car, I would take it over a civic if I had the chance
New of course. 1SS w/RS and that's it. It's by far the best looking, save for the classics, which it borrows from... I was looking at the Lancer hard and trying to decide what I could afford. Finally I just sat down, took the time to run the numbers on my computer, you know income vs payment vs school. I figured out that I could afford a Lancer and more, talked to a dealer about what really is my dream car, and it turns out I can afford a new one. Surprised the hell out of me but you bet I'm super excited about it. Might be paying for 6 years but it'll be well worth it.

Listen Bob, I didnt mean to step on ur toes when I commented to the OP. Getting an ss/tc was an advice. A turbo kit would be good too, but in the long run, cars that can support the turbo like the ss/tc from the factory will be more reliable performance wise then n/a cars with a kit slapped. So many nancy's crying here over some dumb ****.
Yea well sorry Mr. Rogers isnt here to feel your sympathy. Just giving the man some advice, hes here telling his fellow cobalt owners on how he got smoked by a cavy, id feel pretty bad myself.
Lol true that I must've had the wrong definition stuck in my head when I thought of grocery go getter but then again comparing a sport compact to regular LS which one weighs more on a grocery go getters side. If you want to drive a regular LS thats fine, its a great car, will get you from point A to point B, is reliable and will get u excellent gas milage but please dont post on here saying you lost a race, its not a track car. LS is very reliable, just dont advise you racing it thats all.
Im sure you don't care about speed but the OP's story was leaning towards the performance side hence the terms he used like quote "ask him to race me". Ring a bell? Ding ding ding!

get lost man. Not everyone wanted a top dog cobalt because at the end of the day its still a cobalt. Might be a decent car but all your doing is splitting hairs. They are both sport compacts. LS/LT/SS/SC/TC/SPORT....

you know on LS1tech there was just an 00 WS6 turbo that made 900hp with 40k on it for 17k. you might want to think about trading that crappy daily driver of a cobalt and getting a real car.....

when people say Built not Bought. thats not what they mean. they mean performing mods on your car but not doing any install work yourself. kinda like taking your car to a shop to install an intake or springs. i wouldnt say its a smart idea to buy a LS instead of an SS/TC just so you can build it, not buy it. your gonna spend more money in the long run, and you wont have **** for a warranty.

Not everyone can afford to pay the money upfront for a built car. When I bought my car I couldn't afford the sc so I went to a base base base model cuz that's all I could afford. When money allowed and my warranty was up (which was about 2yrs ago because I drive A LOT) then we started on the big stuff. If your not in a rush you can actually build an LS for under what one would pay for the higher models. Specially year for year.
INCLUDING my paint job, body kit and cost of buying the actual car, I paid LESS for my car DONE then I would have going out and buying the supercharged at the time and it comes in damn close to what people are paying for the TC. My car WILL outrun a stock TC and probably even a mildly modded TC. And the icing on the cake is it's EXACTLY what I wanted looks, performance and creature features wise.
Oh and as someone else said... insurance = cheaper. car payment = cheaper. Finding geniune parts at a great price = cheaper. Watching the extremely pissed off tc owner in your rear view mirror as you just spanked his ass with your grocery getter... priceless!!
There are MANY MANY upsides to building an LS over just going out and buying the car straight out... but the biggest is self satisfaction of taking a step back and looking at your "new/old" car going "damn, we did a ******* pimp job" not stepping back and being like "damn I bought a damn good looking car from the dealership"
So to all LS owners keep modding your cars... you CAN do it for cheaper then buying a TC, you can have it exactly how you want it and you can BEAT those TC's out there.
