Hoosier 28-10-17 slicks, need tubes?

I've searched this forum and google and I can't come up with a clear answer. it seems alot of camaro/charger guys use these but idk if they're running tubes. I don't know that much about the tube part of slicks to be honest so any insight would be helpful. do I need to run tubes on these Hoosiers?

EXsoccer1921 03-16-2011 02:01 PM

are you trying to run them on your cobalt?

EXsoccer1921 03-16-2011 02:06 PM

either way, people use tubes in their slicks because a race slick has such a thin side wall that it leaks air over time. you can run them with out a tube but you'll need to refill it every so often if you drive it on the street. and check your pressure after every pass if you want to remain consistent. however, advantages to running a tube inside the slick is it stiffens the sidewall up a little bit so there isn't a lot of wrinkle on the launch but still allows for some so there is still little to no spin. also, youre filling the tube, not the tire, so air leakage is no longer a problem. or, you could run a dot slick with a stiffer side wall. you'll spin a little bit more on the launch but you'll be able to drive it on the street, to the track, meets, etc.. and won't have to worry about it leaking air.

yes on the cobalt. not worried about driving on them, gonna switch out in the pits.

so I should be good to go without tubes, because I don't think I could find any. or I'm just blind.

i don't even think a 28"x10" will fit on our cars. you'd have to make like a 6 point turn just to get off the track..

a 26"x9" is plenty of tire..

SOHC24powa 03-16-2011 02:16 PM

it's the only 17" full slick. they were gonna go on 17x7.5 +35 wheels.

EXsoccer1921 03-16-2011 02:17 PM

yeah they wouldn't even fit on a 7.5, hoosier rates their tires by tread width. so that x10" is more like a 12" wide tire..

if you want a slick but still want a 17" go with m/t's bike slick.

Hoosiers minimum spec wheel width was 8" so I figured .5" wouldn't hurt. and I've been looking for the 17" bike slick but can't find them. must be looking in the wrong place.

EXsoccer1921 03-16-2011 02:23 PM

yeah, that is the absolute minimum. i wouldn't even get a wheel that is the minimum size. let me get you the link to the bike tires.

the reason the 28" isn't your best choice for these cars is one, theres just not enough room. and two because its too tall to get an effective launch out of. you may keep traction like a mother fucker but in return you won't be able to launch as hard and accelerate as quick trying to spin a 28" vs a 26" or 24.5". the setup i'm going with later this year is a 4.45 final drive a 24.5x8x15 slick. you can run your 28 and launch at whatever rpm you want. i'll run my setup and launch at 4k and we'll see who 60's first :)

thanks. I'm not really looking to launch hard yet. I just don't want to spin anymore lol. 13.5@110 2.4 60' is the best I can get on the conti's.

EXsoccer1921 03-16-2011 02:42 PM

you'll definitely benefit from the bike slicks then. those are what cmiller runs and he pulled a 1.8 60' on them iirc, maybe a 1.7 i'm not 100%

EXsoccer1921 03-16-2011 02:43 PM

just sucks you guys have such big brakes lol. you'd be amazed at what that extra 1" of sidewall can do by dropping from a 17" to a 15" and still running the same tire height

SOHC24powa 03-16-2011 02:45 PM

I couldn't sworn cmiller ran 24/8.5/15 on American racing wheels. or was that his setup before he got rid of the brembos. because I don't want to get rid of the brembos lol.

SOHC24powa 03-16-2011 02:46 PM

I know don't remind me haha.

EXsoccer1921 03-16-2011 02:49 PM

that was before he switched. maybe it was someone else haha, its been a while since i read it. but i know there was a bolt on tc pulling 1.7-1.8s on that slick i gave you the link to.

SOHC24powa 03-16-2011 02:58 PM

that's good news. appreciate it man.

EXsoccer1921 03-16-2011 03:33 PM

no problem.
