My Toyo Proxes R888 unprofessional street review
I just wanted to take a little time to give a quick overview on my experience with the tires I have been running on my Redline all year. I haven't seen anyone else on here run them, so I thought I'd give my 2 cents.
The tires are Toyo Proxes R888 in 245/40/17. Here they were the day they showed up back in early spring. They cost $804 shipped to my door.

I have them mounted on 17x9" wheels and my suspension setup consists of Pedders coilovers, Powell hardcore sway bar and stage 2 trans mounts. I purchased these mostly for straightline traction after doing tons of reading. The car makes 600whp on its high boost so I knew I would need a suspension setup and tire combo that play nicely and can still take corners unlike a drag radial and last a little bit. I have been more than impressed with them, and when they wear out I will definitely be buying another set. With just a little heat in them they hook incredibly well. On a nice road on a hot day it will hook 2nd up to the high 400's whp range, and with the boost turned up the car will spin 2nd but pull very hard while spinning a bit, then you hit 3rd and it hooks instantly. Even rolling in 3rd and letting 30 psi (600whp) come on the car will hook right away, and if its colder out it will spin for a second and then hook, but again, even when the car is spinning a little the car is pulling very hard, unlike a normal street tire with "wasted" spin. Often times I do a short rolling burnout in 2nd to get a little heat in them before a run, and they respond very well to the quick warm up. If you have seen any of my recent videos in the war stories section you will see that these tires seem to take a lot of the "disadvantage" away from the FWD platform.
Another thing to note of course is that they do amazingly well around corners (as they should, since that is what they are marketed for). I don't partake in any autocross or road racing events, but I like to tear up twisty back roads quite often, and I feel confident with the R888's on all 4 corners.
They also do surprisingly well in the rain. I had to drive 6 hours home in the pouring rain the first time I took them on a trip and I was nervous after hearing horror stories of R compounds and wet roads, but even at 80-85 mph after I got comfortable I never had a single issue or felt out of control at all. I have driven them countless times in the rain, light and heavy, over the year and never had any "close calls" or any issues.
As for longevity, if you have seen my videos you understand that the tires get spun a bit as I pedal in 2nd, and I do "Mexico" runs often, and have attended a roll racing event, so they get driven on pretty hard and they get spun. I originally told myself I'd be happy if all 4 get me through the season. I now have over 6,000 miles on them, with a mix of highway/city/aggressive driving on them and they still look very good. I'd say there is about 70% or more usable tread life on them. I rotated them once at 3,000 miles and they are pretty even right now. I am pretty confident they will at least get me until the end of next year, as the car is about put away for winter now.
They look pretty wicked on the car too

The only con I could think of is the road noise they have. They have a buzzing noise when you drive and it gets louder at higher speeds, but you get used to it after a while. If you listen in my videos you can hear the tires when I let off after a run. My car is pretty quiet so I noticed it right away, but it doesn't bother me at all, just thought I'd mention it because it may bother some people.
Sorry for the long post, I've just been very pleased with these tires and wanted to share my experiences
Just goes to show what a proper suspension and tire setup can do.

my friend kevin runs these on his zfr tc! he's had them for over a year making over 430 whp, and yes, he can aalllllmost hook 2nd, definately 3rd. very nice tires, especially for the price! i'm gonna be getting these next set.

Even when its cooler out they still hook pretty well with a little heat in them! They treated me well even in fall. Put them on my friends 350whp TVS car and in no way shape or form could we spin 2nd when it was chilly out, so that was cool
About time you did a review
Good stuff man. I currently have powell's yyz with koni front and rear and wonder if i'd see an advantage in straight line traction with coil overs and lowering about an inch. Definitley getting some grippy tires(probably these) when I put my s259 on. I'm happy to hear about the rain driveability and longevity as mine is a daily driver.
Good review!
Good review!
I put these on my car this year and I love them as well. The only thing you really need to watch with them is the amount of time you keep them in cold weather. They will harden up and never be the same.

Good write-up! I wonder if these have more grip than NT05's. The tread wear rating of 100 (vs 200 for the NT05s) seems to suggest so.
I have both sets, but I usually run my NT01's now just because they hook so much better than my NT05s. The NT01s are hella loud as well. due to the cross treads. On one of my dyno runs they aborted the first pull because they thought something was rubbing somewhere lol
On my car the NT01's hook up in 2nd with no drama, if properly heated up. Of course I don't have as many powers as OP

They will absolutely hook up better than the NT05. They seem to be pretty on par with the NT01. I was going to run NT05's if I was going to go with a normal street tire because my friend liked them on his 475whp LNF. I looked into the NT01's but after reading countless threads on the Supra and Mustang forums I decided on the R888's. Both seem to be a good choice though.
Good call on the cold weather comment. You don't want to use R compounds in the really cold weather. My friend drove his car with Yokohama Advan A048's on for a couple months in the cold weather and they got hard and became near worthless, to the point where they didn't want to hook up even after he would try to warm them up.

Thanks for the review. A local tire shop offers them at a discount to the members of a certain club that I am a part of and I have been curious about them. After trying the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, though, I am very hard pressed to go back to anything that isn't Michelin but the Michelin Cup tires are much more expensive. Have you tried any other DOT legal track tire to compare?
i currently have pilot super sports and spin 2nd at anything over like 3k rpm (TVS, 2.7, e85 etc). Infa you think you still have 70% tread life with 6k miles on these?? I daily drive my balt in the summer so i went with PSS tires for a little bit extra tread life. But if youre getting that many miles on the r888's i would def consider them

Yeah at 6k miles there is still a lot of life left. I am actually really surprised. My friend has the Pilot Sports (not Super Sports) on his Supra, and they are alright. He got em cheap, but is going to go with the Super Sports or the R888's in spring.
idk what the supra is putting down for power but i spin all day in second at 350ish whp. I like my PSS's but next time around i think im going to get something with a bit more grip even if the tread life isnt as long
You may know that already, but the Super Sports are supposed to be much better than the Sports. The Super Sports replaced the Sports except for a few odd sizes that Michelin hasn't made available yet. I haven't tried both but those who have say they're noticeably better. They're cheaper too.

I figure if I can get 10k miles on a set of soft sticky tires on a 600whp FWD car I'll be more than thrilled. And these are well on par to getting more than that even.

It gets driven pretty much every day in the summer. And most days in the spring and fall when its decent out. So it pretty much serves as my daily for 5-6 months out of the year, with the occasional drives otherwise.
i was dead set on getting a set of 235 40 18 r888s so i went to my local tire shop and they wanted $400 a corner before taxes and install for them!!!! not gunna happen i ordered 4 Nt01 instead for much much cheaper, i hear they are a very similar compound so i expect good things in the traction department.
