What is the widest/best tire size?
 

I'm at the point of switching the stockers (20kmi) and i wanted a straight forward answer on what the widest tire size we can fit? I've searched a little bit but honestly i've been too busy studying for finals to put any real thought into it. I need to buy tires by the end of this month before the snow really starts to come and I wanted a wider tread on stock ss/sc rims? How wide can we go on these rims?

im running a 225/45. i know of people running 235/40, and few running 245/40:eek:
225 is closest to the stock wheels aspect ratio so your spedo wont be too far off
235 is as large as i would go on the stock rim , but the aspect ratio will be far off
245 seems to be pushing it for a 7" rim but its been done and dosnt rub.

btw...i live in fl but even i know you dont go with a wider tier for snow.you want to penetrate through the snow and slush to get to the pavement. pavement will always have much higher traction than ice or snow. there for you want a smaller, more concentrated, footprint.

A 225/40/18 would be the closest to the stock overall diameter. 25.1 inches I believe. If you go too wide on a 7" wheel, not only does it look pretty ridiculous, you don't gain any performance.

I'm running 225/40/18 no problems no rubbing and speedo is right on!

yea i'm not too worried about the sno and fatter tires, i'm more worried about the lack of tread on my current setup, it doesnt snow too much up in nova, but when it does snow they do a shitty job of plowing my streets so i figure some tread is better than no tread

the stock tire size is 215/45/18 25.61" the only 2 plse sizes i would go on the stock 7inch rim

thies are the most common size combos, some listed above will work ..if not be better , but they may be hard to find in other brands.


side note. i dont see how people spend 200+ per tire ...i know there Ultra high performance ..but how much ultra preformance drivng do you do to and from work(or school) . over 80% of your tredware is due to normal driving . seems like a waste of money that could go to somthing better... like buying some steelies and DRs for the track and weekends.)

The pirellis can't get much grip. I have a separate set of ION redline 17" with drag radials. These can hook good, but if the pavement is sandy, they'll spin. So it would be a waste for everyday street use. So those kumhos are good? I'm actually tire shoping for some new tires and I can't decide what to get.

225-235's seem to be the best size for our cars....

you can still drop them with these tires!

i cant tell you this. perelli tires are not the best out there. and for the price...well, lets say u can do much better.

here is a recommendation. i work at a Kal-tire in edmonton and have been for a while and noticed that a lot of people buy by brand....which is okey, if u like spending money and imagining your getting better performance then the guy with tbc tires,lol.

For great performing tires in rain, snow and dry conditions i will have to say go with a Nokian tire like the Nokian WR "all weather" or the GW2 "newer wr" these tires, i found, out performe the perelli P6 and the P- Zero when it comes down to your daily driver and blowin past them hondas.

the traction is far better and noticable from launch!.

a small grin came on my face when my ss/na luanched ahead on a ss/sc intell mid 2nd.

do your research and you will be happy

I have on G-Force KDW2's running 235/40/18 on the stock wheel - No rub, no speedo difference (notable at least) and MUCH better traction than stock. I have also heard of people running 245, but didnt feel like risking it. After doing 235 though, with plenty of room EVEN THOUGH I AM LOWERED, next time i may step it up another notch.

If you are going bigger, don't fuck around with piddly little 225, go for at least 235. You will be happy.

if u want traction for drag and dont want radials/slicks... you can go with like a 275/75R17/R18

it wont be rounded out and has amazing traction. i had them on my motegi traklite 1.0s and could launch at redline with almost no spin

There is no way in hell that a 275/75R17 (let alone 18") would fit on the front of a cobalt. That tire would be over 32" tall. Unless you meant like 35 instead of 75.

you do not want to go with a wider tire in snow. the skinnier the better when dealing with snow.

225/40 or 45 r 18 is the best for our rims due to the 7" width. 235 may work but not well enough for cornering.

as far as what type of rubber that depends on the person. lets face it - some want the tire to last and some dont care for performance gain. some want all out dry traction for strip or maybe the street, some want grip in rain too. It is preference.

PM me with what you want and I can give you some suggestions and pointers. the shoe has to fit the foot is a big concern (tire has to fit rim for good performance) the rest is up to your preference.

yes, that is best. i got snow tires on the stock steelies 195/65 n 245/45 on my mr7s and im gonna try 255/50 next on the MR7's

traklites are 275/50R17... im sorry i thot they were 55s and i measured. they are a lil under 28inches... they are less than 3" from stock 195/16R15

Yeah, that would be a little smaller, lol.:) 28" would be OK for drag racing.......I'm pretty sure they would rub big time on a lowered car.

i have 235 tires and they only slightly rub since im lowered.

I run 315/35/17's on my car on the rear. 245/45/17 up front. It's awesome for dry traction.

245's are great! I have em and love em. But yeah they really need an 8 inch wide wheel. Luckily I have 8 inch wide wheels! ;)
