winter tires on stock ss/tv wheels

I searched around but didn't find what I was looking for exactly..

Anyone run snow/winter tires on the stock ss/tc wheels? Or another 18" wheel for that matter?

Trying to figure out what size to go with..I was thinking of a 215/45/18?

Are you lowered at all? If you're going to run stock wheels, why not just stick with the stock size tire?

Nope all stock suspension. I guess I could go with the stock tire size but winter winter you generally want a skinnier more narrow tire.

The difference between the two is so minimal, I'd say go for whichever you find a better deal in.

Here is the spec differences between stock and what you're looking at

Diameter 637.2mm 650.7mm
Circumference 2001.8mm 2044.2mm
Poke 61.6mm 61.6mm
Inset 141.6mm 141.6mm
Speedo error 0% -2.07%
Reading at 30mph 30mph 29.38mph
Reading at 60mph 60mph 58.76mph
Ride height gain 0mm 6.75mm
Arch gap loss 0mm 6.75mm

Very true, I ran a 205/55/16 on my last car..I know a winter tire should be taller and thinner but choices are a lot more scarce in an 18"

I ran Hankook winter tires in the stock size on stock wheels for one winter before I replaced them with SS NA 17" wheels and winter tires to match. They were Icebear W300 and worked well but it seems like Hankook replaced them with a newer tire. I replaced them to keep the stock wheels away from snow and salt, not because they were lacking grip.

I had General Altimax Artic's on my last car and loved them. They were priced right and I went through everything. The car never skipped a beat. Unfortunately, they don't make them in my size...

I plan to get new wheels In the spring and throw summer tires on those. I was looking around my area for 17s to put winter tires on but there's nothing really around. Plus that's more money to spend....

I ran Blizzak LM60's in 225-40 18 for 3 winters in Colorado weather. In these pictures I was still stock ride height. These things turn a Cobalt into a snowmobile. I used to overtake 4WD SUV's and pickup trucks on all seasons with these things. Incredible lateral traction and stopping power in loose snow.

Because a taller/thinner tire is better for winter. That's why.

215 - 225 is a minimal difference and i bet you will never know the difference when driving through snow.

I just grab w.e is cheaper when i buy tires. There just winter tires nothing fancy.

Do you want a deep snow tire? Blizzak LM70/80.

Do you want a tire better for ice? Michelin Xi3.

My last 4 sets of winters tires for my vehicles we're all geared towards deep snow grippers. Which is great for not getting stuck, or getting unstuck by yourself(shovel, kitty litter, floor mats, etc)

I just bought a brand new pair of 225/40/18 Xi3 for my stock SS/TC rims. Decided to try more of an ice geared tire this time.

I have Michelin X-Ice Xi2 (the equivalent of Xi3 for trucks/SUVs) and they're excellent.

This is my first set of Winters I've owned. I'm never going back to all seasons. They're just cheap Winter Claw tires. Next time I'm gonna get something better.

yellowsupercharged06 - I understand the size difference is minimal and I'll probably never notice. I was just saying a narrow/taller tire is better for winter driving..I just was curious as to what size everyone was running..

shanedude - whats your initial thoughts/experience with the xi13 so far?....I'm leaning towards that tire..

^^This.
People that brag about how well their all A/S tires do in the winter and have never run snow tires don't even know how much difference they make. As I always say: An A/S tire is OK year round. Never great. They are by definition a compromise. Snows are worlds better in winter and performance summers are worlds better in summer. Yes it's a bigger investment up front but remember you're only running one set at a time so they will last twice as long

I cannot say snow just started to stick around here. I need a good driving season before a review.

I had toyo g02 plus on 17" rims for the ss/tc for 2 seasons. They were a good snow tire but I'm giving them to my girlfriend so I could get brand new Xi3's on stock 18's (I love the look on the stock sstc rims. They are light for an 18" too) And the 17" I was using had horrible snow/ice packing around the brakes. Would send them off balance sometimes had to spend 5 minutes scrapping them out.

Exactly. I started doing this years ago and I'll never go back. One of the best things I've ever done to a vehicle. Yes it's a lot of money but it's so worth it. And like you said, having summer and winter tires makes both sets last a lot longer..

We have about a foot of snow right now so it's time to pull the trigger. Going to stop to see what kind of deal ford can give me on the xi3's otherwise I'll be ordering from tire rack...I just don't want to eat the $70 for shipping

Discount Tire ships for free. Their prices are sometimes more than Tire Rack but (being in Canada) shipping is very expensive and free shipping always pays off for me. It's worth a try.
