I have browsed and browsed through the forums, I just can't find a removal guide for the rear 6x9 speakers! I have a base model '05. I just looked at them, and I don't even know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

about the rear speaker removal...

its going to be a B%$#H...

you have to start by removing the rear seats (the backing) when folded down have clips on the out sides of the seat when can be push wth a flat head screw driver.. then the bottom half of the rear seat can be removed..

now you have to reamove all the rear inside plastic body panels.....
as well as the rear head rests (i think its a 3/4 socket)
only then can you remove the rear deck lid to gain access to the rear speakers..

Including for us few with manual crank windows (how to remove the crank handle).

 

The window cranks have small horseshoe like clips holding them on. They make a tool to remove them.

 

I tried to post this how to on this site but you guys dont let me post enugh pictures, so here is the link to my how to that includes wiring for a car alarm and door panel removal.

You dont need that tool. Just find out where the openning to the clip is and slide a washcloth behind the crank moving it side to side and putting pressure on the clip, it'll pop right off...

 

i finally replaced those stupid stock 6 1/2s, gm is really cheap! they have 1 screw and a clip holding in the speaker so i had to make my own holes but i didnt have a drill, i just used some of that heavy duty double sided foam tape and it works great! no distortion or anything! when i get the chance i will do a how to for the 6 1/2s, and i will also do a how to for the spring installation.

 

Ya thats exactly what Im trying to do right now. Replace the 6 1/2s. Crutchfield.com says to use the factory hardware to install the speakers, but you cant because of the ghettofied teardrop **** in the door. I was going to just drill holes, but I wory about rust. I know moisture gets in there. And the way the stock speaker was sealed in there, tells me I should have the aftermarkets sealed just as well. But unless I can fabricate something from the old speaker, Im screwed cuz nobody has anything out for the Cobalt right now as far as car audio install kits. I couldnt even find one for a new head unit!!! Im so pissed right now...

 

I just did the rear 6x9's and actually it wasn't too bad of a job. The rear seat doesn't have to come out like previously mentioned. All you have to do is pop the C pillar covers off (2 clips), unbolt the headrests(2 13mm bolts each), and pull the 2 pins out of the black plastic piece holding the deck down. Then you pull the deck forward enough to swap out the speakers.

Its a little tricky getting the C pillars back into place though - mine are still a little bit popped out in the front. Have to go back and tidy them up.....I've been fighting a stomach bug for the past couple days and when I'm sick I don't have patience (shouldn't really have messed with the speakers at all) so I thought it was better to just stop messing with it instead of getting mad and breaking it, lol.

So now the whole system is in, other then tidying up a couple things and hiding a couple of wires. Amp rack in the trunk came out really nice. Will have pics as soon as I run new speaker wire for the rear speakers and hide it properly like the other wires are.

 

are the c pillars the paneles that are covering the rear windows in the cobalt coupe? also how hard is it to pop them off?

 

The C pillar is the tan panel that goes from the rear deck to the roof. They pop right off with only 2 clips holding them on(just use your hands and work a couple fingers in from behind the headliner then pull off). In my car they don't come all the way off, they were still attached by these plastic pieces, but I suspect that might be because I have side curtain air bags.

Also, when you put them back on, insert the little tabs on the bottom of them into the slots of the black trim piece below it(by the quarter window) before you snap them down. If you snap them down first the tabs won't go in. I think it relies on a little tension to keep everything fitted together properly.
