Camshaft position center problems

Hey guys i need help. I have had problems with the camshaft position center. The check engine light was ON. The car repair man said it was CPC and the error code was P0010. I disconnected the battery, replaced the CPC and reset it. The engine light disappeared. I was driving in the highway and the engine started sounding like exploding. I stopped. The engine was smoking and leaking a lot a oil.

The question is if the camshaft replacement could have caused the problem or it could have been problems of the engine itself?

I have a 2006 Cobalt ss 2.4L
