no service = voided warranty??

So today when I get home from work I see my mom put out a couple pieces of mail of mine. So I'm looking through and I get to one from GM or something like that, so I open it. Start reading and it says, your car hasn't been in for service in a while and needs it's routine 5000 mile service to make your car run better, longer, and to not void your warranty What?! My car runs fine and I do my own oil changes which is why I haven't brought the car in for service. But my question to you guys is: Can they really just void my warranty like that for not bringing it in for service, even though it runs perfectly fine?

I mean if they can and they're going to make a big deal about it, I'll just go pick up some oil and bring it in and have them change my oil so they can say they did service on it.

Was it a DEALER or General Motors that sent you that letter?

I'm guessing dealer, b/c I had my LS for 25,000 and never got a single letter from GM telling me I was required to go to a dealer for service to keep my warrenty. They are probably just trying to drum up business.

now that i think about it, it might have been the dealer because at the bottom of the letter it had all the locations for healey brothers (the dealer) in this area

well if it is the dealer, can they really take my warranty for that?? if not then im not gonna bother going in

Call your regional GM office and tell them that your dealer is trying to force your car in for service, and threatening your warrenty with it.

True story. If your current dealer is being lame go elsewhere.

if you read closly it will likly say that your car is required service every 5000 miles, but doesnt say it needs to go to them. things like this trick people into thinking they need to go to the dealer for oil changes. they cant void your warrenty, however push comes to shove you may need to provide proof of oil change, bills for supplies work fine. they cant void your warrenty for not having proof, however if its something that could be caused by lack of matinance they can deny the warrenty claim

Good advice! ^^

If you do your own work, just document it in the owners manual. That is proof enough that you have provided service. That's what I do. They can't deny your warranty for not going to them for work.

yeah I just post all my stuff on mygmlink.com since there I can track everything and its a little easier since I spend more time in my chair at work than in my car with the manual.

And no worries, by law they cannot void your warranty just because you never got your oil change with them..

make sure you keep recipts from services you have performed, if your motor blows and you dont have proof of oil changes, they WILL make you pay for it.

They have to prove it is from lack of lubrication due to oil being the consistancy of jello.
