Exhaust cost?!?!

Why are Cobalt exhausts so much money? It's rediculous. My local exhaust shop would do a 3" catback with a dynomax muff for about $250. 3" bent on a regular bender is like 2.75" mandrel bent which is good for well over 300hp. Absolutely rediculous. My Borla dual exhaust with two mufflers for my s2000 was $600. These guys need to put the crack pipe down.

$250 is for aluminized. I dont eat off my exhaust under the car so I dont care. The only part you see is the tip. If it rusts out in 5 years it would still be worth it. If I wanted mandrel bent, SS, and TIG welded I could get it for around $400.

R and D

If you have one built, they build it without testing, it performs how it performs...could be awesome, or you could even lose power. Most of the aftermarket exhausts have a ton of R&D time put into them to ensure they get the gains that customers expect.

Which makes plenty of sense on an NA car. The exhaust on a 250whp NA Honda must have tons of R&D time to perfect the exhaust pulse. On a FI car you could buy a $5 turn down and stick it on the end of the cat and be as good as it gets. The only deciding factor between exhausts that I can see is how the system sounds.

other cars' exhausts cost just as much. i paid close to $1300 for the GReddy Evo2 on my Z, so i am glad to have a car where the exhausts are cheaper than that for a top of the line product. There are also Z exhausts out there from a couple companies that run close to $3000.

is the glass half empty or half full?

i think we have it pretty good as far as exhaust prices considering the companies that make those products, i.e. Corsa and Borla...

Ooooh, a Dynomax muffler and midas bent 3" pipe, bet that's going to sound good

Seriously, if you are on a tight budget you can get the Magnaflow setup for less than $500. Went with the Corsa myself. Sounds good, performs great, and will last forever. I live in the midwest where it snows and they use road salt. I could easily go through 3-4 non-stainless systems over the time I own the car so I think the Corsa will pay for itself.

if you do that on a Z, the DC Sports headers are about $675, cats are about $600, and then add a $1000 cat back.

we aren't civics, so its not like theres a mass production of exhausts for our cars, its supply vs. demand that also could have something to do with the prices, but i still feel we have it pretty good.

its all a moot point for me because i plan to design my own but whatever, i'm just trying to help

Actually a Dynomax or Magnaflow muffler on a shop bent exhaust sounds great if you get the right muffler and resonator/s. Too many of the premade SS systems sound ricey to me. My Miata has duals with Magnaflow muffs and it sounds awesome. People frequently ask if I have a v8 swap.

I live in the midwest too and have never rusted out a good aluminized shop bent exhaust. All of my Hondas stock exhausts have rusted out though.

I think I'm going to go with a shop bent setup using a magnaflow SS muffler and resonator from Jegs.

its loud but not like..glass pack loud, and this was on my base (which is totalled). the catback actually made it a little quieter cuz i put a longer resonator, and it took out all the droning, it wasnt all that loud and could definately feel the gains and it sounded really deep and powerful at high rpms
