Is it worth Upgrading from a 2.2 to a 2.4?

its coming to that time where i need to make a decision about my car!

I looked into getting an SS/SC but i found that it was more then i was willing to pay for a Cobalt. So now the last car im looking at is the SS 2.4.

I have a 2.2 and im really happy with it but my dilema is i dont know if i should put the turbo on this car or use that money to upgrade to a 2.4 and drop a turbo on it next year.

*Reasons for trading.
This car has given me absoulutly NO problems its been perfect! But i have put ALOT of miles on it in the 9 months ive had it ( 25000) I now work 2 miles from my job and i know i wouldnt have the problem this year.

I love the way SS look and how the 2.4 comes with better suspension and a better engine.

---------

Now i know a 2.2 turbocharged will be way faster then a SS or SS/SC but i was thinking if i get the 2.4 being that it is a bigger platform that when i turbo charge it in the future it will be even faster!

I heard rumors about the 2.2 being a better Engine for forced induction , is this true? I thought that the 2.4 had forged internals, which work make it better for FI.

Thanks for listening and any insight is greatly appreciated. Im so undecided!

the only reason i can see the 2.2 having a rumor that its better for f/i is due to lower compression but its not that much lower than the 2.4 so either engine is gonna need internal work for psi levels beyond 8 psi or so, the 2.2 is still a good platform but i think you may be happier with a 2.4

Go take a test drive! That should make your descion easier. But consider:

If a 2.4L could be turboed or S/C it would be pretty fast. In stock for its no slouch though. Just keep the revs up and it responds eagerly. The higher redline is a bonus.

The suspension is about 90% the same as an ION Redline. You get the big brakes and 5 lug axles too (same as the S/C SS)

I don't think the 2.2L is better for F/I----except it does have a lower compression ratio and could run more boost. If you tore down a 2.4L to build for boost you could lower the compression ratio anyways.

The 2.2L does not have: an engine oil cooler, piston oil squirters or forged rods. The 2.4L does.

the amount of money you'd lose on trading in a 1 year old car with 25000 miles on it is probably enough of a reason not to do it, regardless of any benefits from the new one. unless you had a sizable down payment, or have been paying a ridiculous amount every month, you're goign to get much less for your current cobalt than you still owe. so, unless you want to end up tacking another couple of thousand onto your ss price, don't do it.

Thanks for the info, keeep it comin =)!
Also another thing to keep in mind is im not trying to get a 10 seconds car or anything. I would be happy with 220-300 hp/tq ( after turboing) which i know either engine could accomplish easily.

Which car do you think has great potential?

FLCobalt why does your info on your car say chip. You can't chip our computers. Unless its on of the $15.00 chips that are only a 5 cent resistor.

BTW how is the room under the hood? The 2.2 has ALOT of space, how about the 2.4?

there is the same ammount of room in the 2.4 bay they are almost identical looking, also some parts can be carried over to the new cobalt if you get it, the injen intake will fit, the ss wing will fit, the plate frame will fit, the exhaust tip on the ss is already nice so dont worry about that, the tint will be a loss, alarm system may eb able to be transferred but the stock system does a good job anyway

Do you have just an exhaust tip or a full exhaust, because that doesnt look like the stock muffler?

well there is a gain in the corsa since in some parts of the exhaust it 9is a 2.25 then branches off to a 2.5 so the full 2.5 does work very well

decided against it simply because my car has basically all the features the SS has except the side kirts and the 17's and the suspension.

for the price difference in an SS and a SS/SC its better just to get a SS/SC so i might still get a SC.

I would get some springs and TC your 2.2...in the end you will be saving a lot of money. And the dealership will pay off your trade but did they say anything about adding the difference onto the SS's loan.....your problably upside down on a trade in. Did they tell you how much they would give you for a trade in and do you know how much you owe.

Sure they will pay your loan off for you but if you owe 13k they give you 10k trade and just take the 3k to your new car. But hey they paid your loan off for you right??? Don't be gullable and that $1000 stealth alarm you bought is a rip off also....dealer installed alarms usually are.

stealth is definately not worth 1000$, only thing its good for is teasing my friends and saying i can give you my keys but you still cant start my car. =)

i might as well just get the damn turbo huh? atleast ill be one of the only turboed LS's.
