Canada power shifting and syncronizing rings

Ive been having troubles power shifting or even shifting some what fast when i try to my third and fourth gears let off a nasty grinding noise so i took my car in to a chevy dealership and they said that im shifting to fast and not giving the syncronizing rings time to line up and im forcing it in gear i feel this is bullshit and was wondering if any one else has had this problem also they say theres no fixing just slow down and let rpms drop right down before finishing shifting can any one help me out what can i do to stop this or fix this or ill just have to break it before waranty ends

Mine does that when cold at normal rpm's. Feels like the synchros and dog teeth aren't lined up. Works ok when warm except the 2-3 shift, kind of clunks in.

Powershifting isn't good for the transmission or clutch.......yes, it can make your car faster in a race, but not without it's downsides.

Slow smooth shifting man. Gass off, Clutch in, Slow (meaning don't rush) Smooth Shift, Clutch out, on Gass.

Something that might help is switching to a better tranny fluid. Though if you keep power shifting, no matter what, you'll blow your tranny. And most likely warranty won't do any good, since it will be classified as abuse.

theyd have to prove abuse. i have a clunk from 2-3. i just assumed it was cause the STS isnt stock and the fitment might not be perfect. i've never raced the car

On most things with the tranny, the GM rep is going to claim it is due to abuse. Then, you would have to take them to court to contest it. Good luck there.

If you have the timing down for powershifting and is good at it, then your normal shifting will have almost no wear on your tranny. So don't powershift!

But he doesn't have the timing down, since he is grinding it.

I used to powershift (p/s) all the time when I drove/raced my 'Stangs (not in my SC though).

I was so used to it that it became 2nd nature to me.

A couple of things about it though:
  • P/S will lower your 1/4 mile times by 1/10 - 2/10 (unless your having serious traction problems)
  • P/S will cause a great deal of stress to your clutch and transmission synchros
  • P/S frequently w/o upgrading above mentioned parts, and you WILL break them

Just FYI ...

Even with me performing picture perfect powershifts, I still eventually had to upgrade to an aftermarket Borg Warner T-5 transmission to cope with the stresses of powershifting.

Only way to avoid synchro/clutch problems when powershifting is to buy a transmission and clutch combo whose torque specs are wayyy over that of the original parts.

Dude these transmissions are weak man. I've had my trans worked on 3 times. And when it comes down to it if your car is held up in the shop for 30 days in a year you can claim lemon law on it and fight to get a new car. But the thing is you'll get another car just like yours and it'll do the same **** especially if you mod it. GM told me the last time my car was in that basically don't come back and expect it to be fixed for free next time. So I'm filing with a lemon law lawyer to get my money back or another car because its once its paid for I don't feel like having to shell out cash every time the trans breaks. A lot of the damages caused are due to a blocker ring failure usually 2nd and 3rd, causing the synchros to chaff and teeth to brake off gears. Possibly after awhile of driving the car like there is a broken intermediate shaft, needs replacement of the shifter assembly.
Here was my most recent:
2ND GEAR GRINDS WHEN LET CLUTCH OUT
SECOND GEAR TEETH CHAFFED BAD SYNCHRO ASSMY TEETH SHEARED OFF & 1ST GEAR
ROAD TESTED SEVERAL MILES---TO DUPLICAITE-R&R TRANSMISSION
TO INSPECT---REPLACED 1ST & 2ND GEARS & SYNCHRONIZER ASSMY
REPLACED BLOCKER RINGS & BEARINGS--ALSO HAD TO CHIZZEL
BROKEN INTERMEDIATE SHAFT NEEDLE BEARING OUT WAS COCKED & STUCK IN CASE HALF-- REPLACED THE SHIFTER ASSY ON TRANS.
REFILLED & ROAD TESTED ALL OKAY THIS TIME----OLH--2.OHR---TO REMOVE BEARING CAGE & ROAD TESTING ETC.

The repair had to be authorized by a GM service manager, and they wouldn't take my car in the first day i brought it there and it was doing it i had to come back 6 times more till they took it and gave me a rental.

Same thing happened when my clutch went at 6k.

Dealer said he had to get the parts and it took over a week to get everything done.

I received a rental car as well.

But I got it back, and all is good!

Has it done it since new? If you've been powershifting all this time, you may have toasted the synchronizers already.
