2001 Civic vs. Cobalt real world gas mileage
I hope I posted this in the right forum, and I hope this question is OK.
I am about to look for a replacement for my 2001 Civic LX, and I really like the Cobalt. The only thing that worries me is the difference in reported gas mileage. I usually average about 35-39mpg over the summer, and about 32-35mpg over the winter with about 85% of my driving being highway. Does anyone know how the real world mpg of these cars compare? It matters alot to me, as I am commuting about 700 miles/week. I am planning to buy a "stripper" Cobalt if I get one, with absolutely no options (hopefully roll up windows. Are they available?).

With a light foot, you can get 25 in the city in a 2.2 auto.
You can get maybe 37 on the highway, if you drive 65. You will get more if you can find a manual.
A cobalt may not get as good of milage as a honda, but they have torque.

I have a 2005 base model (stick). If I go light with the right foot, I can get about 34.5 mpg mixed driving. On the highway though, its much better. On a trip back from the track last month, I got 39.6 mpg. (100+mile trip)
my 05ss/sc with stage 2, 2.85" pulley and a few other goodies gets 35-28mpg on the freeway, 28-32 in town if im nice to it (thats rare).
if you looking at a new cobalt, check out the xfe (iirc thats what its called), its designed to get some very good fuel economy, i beleive its rated at 38mpg freeway. its a 2.2l 5 speed.

Check out the new cobalts coming out for 2009 (might be available now actually )called the XFE. Its a manual base model that gets better gas mileage then a lot of other cars. I will find the link for you, give me one second.

Guys, unfortunately it looks like a Cobalt is in my near future. 
I don`t really have time to devote to selling the Civic (though I will if I find a buyer), but I just put a clutch and alternator in it, which makes it harder to sell. And it seems as though I cant justify the increase in payments, etc and the Cobalt`s excellent gas mileage, which I think will be a few mpg better than the Civic, isn`t enough to justify it.

how many miles and where you located? Cobalt gets good mileage, my SS/SC got around 37 mpg on the hwy when I went to NY and still beat up a new stang gt. I had an LS 5-speed befor upgrading to the SC and that got around 31 in mixed driving, but more of city driving just not alot of stop and go but close. On the hwy it got close to 40mpg, course that would go down the moment I had to slow and get moving again but it only dropped to 35-37mpg than. I used to go about 2 and a half weeks between fills up when I had that, actually miss it alittle.
haha, yea, you can get good mileage in the balt by doing that, cannot say if you well get that good in the balt though, it is a bigger engine than the 1.8L or whatever the civic has(more power for the balt down low and such ='s not as good mileage) but still respectable.

I have a 130 mile commute daily, mostly highway. The engine itself only has 50,000 miles though. It has a new clutch, alternator and belt, and most of the front suspension is new. I am in southeastern PA.
