Weird sound in high gear at low speed?

Does anyone else's car sound weird/loud in 5th if you're doing around 45 at less than 2000RPM? For a matter of fact it's not only 5th gear, most of gears the engine sounds weird, like a truck, under 2000RPM.

So you're saying I shouldn't drive at low speeds in high gears? Is that bad? I mean not like 10mph in 5th but something at RPMs under 2000? Also, the pimp slapping lazy ****** lol... should I upgrade tranny/engine mounts or are they good stock? Sorry I'm new to cobalts and manual trannys.

the mounts are very soft stock....but making them more solid will give you vibs and rattles...
I personally dont like to drive below 2000rpms unless its in first or second.

Yeah, don't do that. Your engine isn't happy. Upshift and it will like you again.

I cruise at 1800RPMs, but under load/accel, always over 2000.

Lol, my other car was v6 3.1L with auto tranny so I usually cruised 70MPH at 1800RPM guess the i4 has less displacement so it needs to rev more

And it also was an auto, so it would downshift at the right time.

Alright so what should I keep my RPMs around for the best fuel economy?

its very situational.

if your putting along in a 60mph zone you might do fine cruising at 1900
but if you need to accelerate, you need to downshift, not just throttle on like you would in an automatic.

your gear needs to reflect the LOAD on the engine,
if your putting along, you wanna keep a low rpm to get good gas mileage, but not so low that your using alot of throttle to keep it there.

if you increase the load *IE* accelerate, you need to be up in the 2500+ rpm range, so the engine is makin good power for its fuel econemy.

hope that makes sense

LOL!!!!

put it this way, shift at 2500 rpms in all gears. If you live in stop and go traffic, you wont get outta 4 much. But usually you only shift to 5th if ur 45+ 5th gear is mostly used on highway where you dont need much throttle to keep the car going. On residential streets, your better off staying in 4th. cause comes a hill, you can floor the car and it wont go no where and you'll end up bogging the car bad and stall and it wont be very cool at X amount speed...

Go with what most of these people have said. I'll cruise with my rpm's between 1500-2000. When I need to accelerate I down shift and get my rpms over 2k.
