View Full Version : Noise coming from spring
1slobalt12 06-27-2008, 12:36 PM Ok so i just had a set of Canuck Motorsport springs installed about 2 weeks ago, when i first got them back they drove fine no noise ,etc. The other day i whent and had an inspection done on my car and while driving it home i noticed noise coming from the passenger rear side, so i went into my trunk took everything out and made sure nothing lose was moving around making the noise. But yet their is still noise coming from that area im 90% sure its the spring. Could it be possible when i went to get the inspection done and they jacked up the car the spring came out of place? I have yet to go for an alignment also.
ls1fbody 06-27-2008, 12:41 PM it's possible, but it shouldn't shift. when you get an alignment, just jump in the bay and check it out.
1slobalt12 06-27-2008, 01:30 PM i just took a look at the spring it hits hitting against this piece towards the bottom of the spring , ill try and get a picture of it
D4u2s0t 06-27-2008, 01:33 PM sounds like it's not seated properly. should have nothing to do with jacking the car, as long as it's bolted in properly. those pics will be a big help though
1slobalt12 06-27-2008, 02:01 PM ok i just took a few pics here they are

ls1fbody 06-27-2008, 02:09 PM wow, looks like the spring is too large in diameter. thats weird.
Yeah, looks like a faulty design. I would send pictures to the manufacturer and request new springs.
D4u2s0t 06-27-2008, 02:19 PM is the top and bottom of the spring very snug against the bumpstop and base? it looks like it's not, and it almost looks like that's a front spring. can you take a pic of the very top and very bottom of the spring, showing how they are sitting on the bumpstop and base? if possible
yea, i think i can pretty confidently say that you have FRONT springs on the rear. unless it's just a really shitty design. or, whoever installed them did so backwards.
see how the coil is very loose against the bumpstop? that should be very snug. the bigger coils on top and bottom go in the front.

I agree it looks like the spings in the rear are the ones that are suppose to be on the struts. Did you do the install yourself? Did all the springs look the same. I wonder if they gave you 2 front sets and not a rear set. Either that or you have the rears installed in the front somehow but i don't think they have a big enough opening at the top and bottom to even be able to do that. If you didnt do it yourself i would take it back to that shop that did it and tell them they need to fix that
1slobalt12 06-27-2008, 03:08 PM ok here are some more pics and 2morrow im gunna call the guy who installed them and bring the car back 2 him next chance i get

D4u2s0t 06-27-2008, 03:14 PM that looks right actually... i guess it's just shitty fitment of the springs
1slobalt12 06-27-2008, 03:15 PM hmmm maybe ill send some of those pics 2 the company then and maybe they can send me a new spring
D4u2s0t 06-27-2008, 03:37 PM for a quick fix i would try spinning the spring so that the coil is below that part... worth a shot, and looks like it would work.
1slobalt12 06-27-2008, 03:40 PM how do i do that just take the wheel of and try turning it by hand? im noob in this area dont rlly know much
D4u2s0t 06-27-2008, 03:52 PM you can try turning it by hand. there shouldn't be much tension on the spring if it's in the air. if it's too hard to turn, all you have to do is take off one bolt, at the bottom of the strut. if you're not sure what to do pm me and i'll walk you through it. it's cake, and in a worst case scenario should take maybe 2 or 3 minutes.
1slobalt12 06-27-2008, 03:55 PM k rlly appreciate the help, wont be able to do it right now , prob gunna end up doing it 2morrow afternoon
Area47 06-27-2008, 04:40 PM my ssc springs squeak int he rear sometimes if i hit a bump just right
Sizzle06 06-27-2008, 04:55 PM Mine sound like there is something metal clanging around in the back like something is loose.
D4u2s0t 06-27-2008, 04:55 PM Mine sound like there is something metal clanging around in the back like something is loose.
then it probably is  have you checked?
Sizzle06 06-27-2008, 05:01 PM Had an alignment done the other day, just haven't had time to jack up the car and take a look.I will try and get to it today.
gocanucksgo 06-27-2008, 08:28 PM Mine look and sound fine...of course there's Koni's with them.
dtabbs 06-27-2008, 10:46 PM The spring is installed upside down. Just turn it over the correct way. Also according to the manufacture you are supposed to trim your bump stops 1" front and rear. Check the sticky I posted the install doc there.
Dont blame the manufacture for a faulty install.

kk thx for the info. Faulty install not my fault i brought it 2 a place and had them install the springs, and also had no clue you were suppose to trim the bumpstop
1slobalt12 06-28-2008, 11:59 AM Well i went outside jacked up the car took the wheel off and turn the spring by hand, problem solved fit perfectly now and only hear noise if i go over a nice sized bump, not every little one like before. Thanks for everyones help
dtabbs 06-29-2008, 09:32 AM If you just turned the spring it did not fix it. They are still installed upside down. Take it back to the installer and have them fix it, should only take about half an hour.

^This is true. I had the CA#1 springs on upside down at first. Sounded awful. Flipped them around. Perfect! Not hard at all to do yourself.
1slobalt12 07-02-2008, 12:14 AM i would do it myself if i had the tools 2 do it with, im prob gunna either go 2 my friend who has all the tools needed or just call back the guy who installed them, cant do it until around the 14th tho since i work 2 jobs and will be away on vacation... is it bad for the car if i drive it like that for the time being?
Ramphex 07-02-2008, 12:31 AM It's not bad, but it's recommended to stay away from large bumps get the car into to those people when you get a chance. Actually came to thought about it, the back springs removal is a piece of cake and much easier than it seems and much easier than front so I'd suggest trying it yourself after doing a little search on the forum on spring removal.
D4u2s0t 07-02-2008, 12:41 AM if you were closer i would help you. it's a 10 minute job, no joke.
1slobalt12 07-02-2008, 10:28 PM ok so i read up on how to do the back springs, i can deff do it myself only prob is i dont have jack stands would it be safe to do one side at a time on the jack that is given with the car?
1slobalt12 07-03-2008, 08:19 PM ok so me and my friend just fix the problem with my rears springs. No more noise and it rides much better, wish i did the back springs myself 2 begin with was rlly easy. Thanks everyone for the help

every time i've helped someone do springs, we always do the back first. and every time, they say "o god... i feel like an idiot asking for help with that"
the fronts are a little more complicated and more time consuming, but still simple.
glad you got it fixed.
NexTnmE 07-03-2008, 10:18 PM Nice dude. Glad your car is all good now. It sucks because there is no way to visually tell what end is the "top" of the rear spring until it is compressed...unless you've done many cobalts before...

all of the springs i've done always have writing, or a company logo or something. if they didn't, it would be hard to tell though.

Hmmm. Good call on the logo. Unfortunately mine didn't have anything. This might be the case with a few "smaller" brand names not printing anything. I was hoping to see the rate or brand name or at least something on them...but...yeah...I guess live and learn. But it makes it that much more rewarding when you don't bring it to a shop and fix it yourself. When you've got bloody knuckles from workin' on the balt, its a sign of a weekend well spent :twothumbs

Very true.
Ya there was nothing to tell top and bottom on the springs.
