Recently a couple threads were created to see who would be interested in running up to Payson for some driving goodness along with some vid and pic stuff. Well this thread will be the poll to make sure we have the right date for the run. The days will all be sundays so most people should have no issue with goin. So far the times have yet to be determined for the start of the run however, it is likely the the run will start at about 7:30-8:30am simply because this would give us the most daylight to hang out and take a nice load of pictures and vids.

Where and what time do we meet for the drive to Payson there is a Burger King on Ellsworth and Apace Trail that could work then you take Ellsworth til it turns into Usery Pass and go past the Salt River and Saguaro Lake 'tis a nice little drive fun and fast ;)

We'll go ahead and meet up at the Conoco gas station just outside Ft. Hills. It's one mile passed Shea on the right side of the road. It's on the same road that fort mcdowell Casino is located, but across the highway. Hell the road might even be called fort mcdowell, I forget though.

there is a gas station (texaco) at country club and mckellips right off the freeway (202) according to google earth that is the center most spot for all of us to go to payson and we can take the 87 north which is a straight line to our destination (meeting spot for the inner city folk)

The time is fine for me. But I still have a problem with the Texaco meeting spot. This is going to cause a good amount of people to have to backtrack away from there homes just to get to the meeting spot. Like myself, that is going to cost me an extra 15 miles just to go down south and then have to head back north, Jay is in the same boat. However, the origional meeting spot I had offered that is outside of Ft. Hills will cause no one to go out of their way because it is DIRECTLY on the route to Payson.

I would still like to meet outside of Ft. Hills, but if everyone else thinks that Texaco in Mesa is a better spot for some reason, then I suppose that will be the spot.

Also this may be an early notice but anyone that has a pair of two way radios please raise your hand as these will be used for traffic updates while driving ... so basically the stereo wont be used on this drive

(don't say weekend or you give her a chance to give an answer that you may not like) if the coast is clear which it should be simply lay down your plans and let her know what is going on ... be detailed about why you are going and why it is important to you and ask if she has any hobbies or things she is into (never talk about just yourself) ... this is when you can ask if she would like to come along with you and help take pictures and hang out (always give a girl an example of how she can help or interact ... it makes them feel important and wanted) at this point you should be in the clear but of course don't say something stupid like "but of course if you don't wanna go I understand especially if you have something better to do". Well the girl showed up to class today with a nice rock on her finger and was talking about how she had to plan a wedding, so I'm assuming she wouldn't be interested. well with the amount of cars showing up and the fact the qt is a top tier gas provided maybe it would be a better idea to meet up at the qt if not for the better gas simply because we would fill up almost any gas station with the amount of people we are gonna have

Nevermind. I just bought one. I saw it and it wasn't that expensive. Figured I was gonna need it again eventually. And I have a very safe place for my laptop. It fits perfectly snug behind the passanger seat with the seat far enough back, while it's in it's paded case.

I said one thing and he said another ... while I was at the court house I noticed that it said he trapped my speed using a stop watch which I beleive it highly innacurate as there is a huge margine of error since a person has to be right on to determine speed. If I am looking at a criminal ticket I would want it to be more accurate than a human hand.

The officer was estimating your speed using a stop watch and two points on the road. Two sources of inaccuacy are present with this type of measuement. 1) the inaccuracy of the distance used (did the cop really mearsure this with a calibrated instrument?), and 2) the inaccuracy of the time measurement (calibrated?). Now here's where it gets fuzzy...

The cop needs to pick two points that he/she can see very clearly so as to know when to start and stop the clock. These to points won't be too far apart for visibility reasons. The problem is, with shorter distances, the percentage of error from the cops reaction time goes up as the distance goes down.

For example: Say your going 90mph (that's 132ft/second) and the cop picks two points in the road that are 132ft apart (easier math). He/she measures the time it takes your Cobalt to go from point A to point B and get 1.00seconds. He does the math and calculates 90mph. But his thumb is not calibrated, so he could introduce +/- .20 seconds of error (just guessing here) into the time measurement. Well, +/- .20 seconds of potential error for a 1.00 second measurment is +/- 20% error. So if the cop factored in this error he/she would have put you speed between 72 and 108 mph. That's a lot of error.

OK, now if the cop picked two points 396 ft apart and measured your time from point A to point B just like the example above, he should have read 3.00seconds on his stop watch (90mph). Assuming the same human error of
+/- .20 seconds, that amounts to only +/- 6.67% error. He would have estimated your speed between 84 and 96 mph. That;s alot closer, but still not very good.

Personally, I doubt that the cop used a distance anywhere near 396 ft if he's parked just off the roadway. That's a long distance to be seeing for an accurate masurement.

I think you get the idea here.

The errors in my previous post should have been factored twice. Once for the stop watch start and once for stopping the watch. So the cop could be WAY WAY off the mark.

I suggest you Google some of this stuff and educate yourself before going back to Payson for your court appearance.

- Have the cop show calibration records for his VASCAR system.
- What are the cops proficiency ratings with this equipment?
- What markers did the cop use and at what distance were they relative to the patrol car?

Call the DPS office and ask for the officers schedule (pretend that you would like to meet with him/her at the office). Try to schedule your court appearance on his/her day off. They might not even show up.

Advise on Payson runs: Slow down to about 65mph on that 8 mile section around the Sycamore Creek area where the speed limit goes down to 55. This is where alll the cops hang out! They nab many people here who put the cruise on 73 because most of the trip is posted at 65.

My son got popped in this section doing 98 in his F-body LS1. Course the cop used a RADAR so he was hosed. I drive to Payson about every other week during the summer, and this Sycamore area is where most folks get pulled over.

I have a pair of Motorolas that has FRS and GMRS. These work really well as long as you wait 1/2 a second after pushing the "talk" button before speaking. We usually use FRS (legal), but have an alternate (GMRS) channel picked out to jump to if we get out of range. Portable CB's work great also, so you don't have to mount a fixed clunker to your dash or counsel.
