Thrown Rod - What's needed to Fix?
Alright Techheads,
2006 Cobalt SS/SC 2.0 LSJ
You all know the car I'm talking about.
Took it into the dealer with a major knocking in the engine and they said that I threw a rod.
Honestly, can't even tell you what that means.
I have mechanic friends so I don't lack assistance in that area and I don't have any problem getting dirty/turning a wrench.
Need to know if this can even be fixed and what would be involved.
Can't really afford a whole new engine right now.

Beginning of the evening some guy told me that he heard some "lower end noise" that started as a tick which ended up as a clack and loss of power by the time I got home that night. Car will still run and move enough for me to get it on the trailer.
I know it's all but impossible for you guys to help with my audio play by play. I'm just trying to give as much info as possible.
All help is appreciated. Anything else, will be reported. I'm not in the mood.

But seriously, I know I'm going to have to tear it down to really know what's wrong.
I was just trying to get the answer to the kind of work involved with a "thrown rod".
Somebody told me I'd have to replace the head.
you (the op) are lookin at a full rebuild (bottom end) or a used/replacement engine (short block)
but like you already stated no one will know till it is dissasembled and checked
sry to hear and gldrop your oil see if theres metal shavings in it
It depends, you have to look. If you "threw a rod" that means it snapped in pieces, came off of the piston or crankshaft, or both and was "thrown" somewhere. A lot of cars throw rods right through the block or oil pan.
It depends on what you see when you take it all apart as to what must be replaced. If it's a 2006, wouldn't this be under warranty? If so, let them fix it for free and be done with it.

I didn't, therefore they won't cover.
no easy way to say it: motor is toast if it is as you described. 1500 bucks plus shipping gets you a new complete drop in motor from me, a qualified motor with 10 hours of racing on it...not trying to profit from your misfortune, just giving you options to think about ....saturn42 on the other forum bought one from me so you can check with him if thats the route you need to take...good luck otherwise, try to get it covered on warranty....
i have quick question was any body watching oil pressure when this stuff went down cuz i have a small tick that is slowwly developing towards the bottom end and i dont know what it is because it only happens once in a while it dont happen every day so i dont no what to think
