Vacation pictures from Africa and Arabia.

At the beginning of this summer my family and I decided to go for Umrah (religious pilgrimage) in Makkah again. And this time, we decided that as long as we were splurging, we would stop in Cairo for sightseeing.

In Cairo, we had a 9 room hotel suite.

We got to go inside the Great Pyramid. It was a ridiculously right squeeze through a ridiculously unnecessary path.

They don't allow cameras inside the pyramid, so I don't have any close up pictures because I left it in the car when we got close.

These mosques are 600 years old, and were part of the first network of Islamic universities, therefore very culturally important.

This mosque is 900 years old, made of Alabaster marble from surrounding mountains, and was converted into a fortress to protect it from the Crusaders.

We went on a cruise down the Nile.

There was a live band, a Whirling Dervish, and a (sub par) belly dancer for entertainment.

And now Saudi Arabia.. I didn't take that many pictures, because I had already taken pictures of everything the last time.

This was taken out our hotel room window in Medinah.

To initiate Umrah when traveling the long journey from Medinah to Makkah, one must stop at the Meekat and pray your intentions.

And to initiate Umrah if you are already in the city of Makkah, as we did later, you must do the same at the Aisha mosque. I thought it's architecture was an interesting blend of tradition and modernism.

In Makkah, we stayed at the Hilton, which was designed to give every room a view of the Holy Mosque, which was right across the sidewalk.

UNFORTUNATELY, they were doing renovation on one section of the Holy Mosque, and this hallway, which was the most beautiful room I had ever been in, had simple drywall instead of the marble, intricate metal work, and intense engravings that it had when I came last year.

Very cool!

I one day would like to take a trip and see the sights. Although not religious myself I would still love to see all the architecture put into those beautiful buildings!

Hope you had fun, but it sure looks like it!
