Go put some Acetone in a plastic cup and watch what it does. Do you want that sitting in your car with all your components (fuel pump, injectors, etc.). Don't do this unless you're an idiot.

Another warning for those that try it on paint - remove the rag from the surface immediately or else it'll burn into your paint. Acetone needs to breathe.

 

Well if you wanted a controlled test you would need to put gasoline in a plastic cup then compare it to a gasoline/acetone mixture similar to the recommended mixture in a plastic cup. it does seem pretty risky though.

 

Okay.... it's a gas tank.... the car runs on gasoline... sure you can throw other stuff in there... I know of people who throw rubbing alcohol or whiskey in there... but then their cars blow up... let's just stuff some K1 or jet fuel in there... it'll go like hell...

isn't acetone that stuff thats in nail polish remover, if so i wouldn't trust anything with the word remover in it, cus it just might remove some parts from your car

 

hmmmm, sound bad.

but you know what its good for? clearing yellowed head light lenses. after years of being in the sun certain plastics yellow in the sun. if you soak a lent free towel and quickly wipe the lense it clears it up. I works because it burns and melts the plastic. now think of putting it into your fuel.

Accetone, alcohol, ethenol all have the same basic properties which essentially evaporate water molecules. but each one has different chemical componets.

The olnly reason i could see to add accetone would be to rid your gasoline of water. and there are better things to do this like 100% alcohol from the car shoppe.

 

Acetone is what people use to remove FIBERGLASS. It's like paint thinner but even worse and more effective.

 

it works, i did this a while back and with no other changes my car jumped up like 3-4 extra mpg driving down the same road and you could feel slightly better throttle response.

i did it for about 4-5 tanks of gas, then just kept forgetting to go back and get some more from walmart

i forgot about it totally until now... but i guess i'll try to pick up some more today

 

Why would you bother, it's like having to calculate the oil mixture on 2 Cycle bikes. Too much of a pain in the ass to have a stupid container of acetone in the back of the car just to save a couple bucks a year.

What if the Acetone getis in your carpet.
What if the acetone gets on your paint.

Me and my dad put toluene in our '98 Z-28 (one gallon to every tank). It works like a charm no problems what so ever. Race car drivers even use this to boost the octane and they put it on their tires to increase traction. It is quite expensive though.

 

toluene is also a disignated substance - it can mess you up pretty bad if you do not handle it properly. It is also the substance that is mainly responsible for the octane rating in most petrol fuels. Just dont breathe in the fumes!!

 

It takes X amount of chemical engery to move X amount of lbs X distance.

Adding 4 oz of anything to your 1536 oz of gas in the tank isn't going to give you any noticable increase in fuel milage. Think about the chemical energy that acetone would have to contain to perform such a feat.

More than likely you put acetone in your tank and you drive with less heavy of a foot and thats how you getting better gas milage.

Maybe you could toss in a tornado while your at it.

I noticed with a 2.4L if u shift above 400rpm u get better gas milage and better performance but then u can shift this motor far past that man have i done that alot!!! but then again i dont run a muffler..have the guts to try that..lol.. I saw what toloulene does in a foam cup!!holy sh-t!! sorry ive only had about 3hrs of sleep for a 10hr shift and well its been 24hrs since i last drove so i dont make any sense...lol keep care everyone...

 

Ok I did some more research.

Regular GAS 91-98 octane contains 125,000 btu per gallon.
Acetone contains 87,400 btu per gallon.

Regular GAS 91-98 octane contains 45 megajoules of energy per kg.
Acetone contains 30 megajoules of energy per kg.

So gallon for gallon Acetone contains less energy than regular gas.

Can someone explain how it contains less energy but someone gives people better gas milage?

These are ideal calculations derivied from tests conducted under ideal conditions. If you were to use a calometer (in Kj) in a lab you would come up with different numbers.
I think its because acetone is able to evaporate water making it more flamible, while gasoline can easily collect water which weakens it's flamibility.

We did a lab in chemistry last semester with hexane and ethenol about this.

I think it all has to do with getting water out of your fuel; which gives you more mpg...

 

ACETONE IN GAS ? What a ridiculous idea. There was a study recently done that tested all of the gas saving theories out there. Guess what out of all the 200 ideas and products none of them worked except. Drive with a lighter foot, use cruise control when possible, don't run your gas eating components as much. I am sure you wont have to pay for any of those. Get a CAI your gas MPG will go up slightly. At least mine has but beyond that...............

I tried the Acetone thing after learning about it off of www.lubedev.com

I put 4oz in my 13 gal tank and I haven't seen squat. If anything my mileage went down.

I've tried it in 2 tanks already and haven't seen improvements. I'm trying a plain tank now to compare.

With so many people praising it, I don't understand. Maybe Balts don't work w/ this...lol...I dunno.
