HELP CV Joint Fell Apart.

Ok, so i was installing my K-Sport coilovers yesterday, and i had everything put back together and i jumped in the car, started it up let out the clutch, and nothing. had a mini heart attack. rolled the windows down to see if i could hear anything and sure enough there's a metallic grinding/knockng (for lack of a better word) noise coming from the drivers side. so i get out and andrew (RooTBeeR) is there helping me, we jack the car back up and low and behold the outer CV joint came apart inside the boot.

Has anyone else seen this happen when they install springs/coilovers? isn't there a clamp inside that keeps that shaft from separating from the inside joint?

when you were installing them and removed the shock in the fron did you just let the hub and rotor assembly just5 hang there or did you rest it on like a ramp or something to take the stress off the axle?

haha yeah, big time, that and i was already about an hour and a half late for the meet.

it's back together, i'm just wondering if anyone has seen this happen, and should i make sure there's not something missing inside?

i let it hang, but only for a few moments, and i think that was the problem, but it only happened on the driver's side.

Yeah that was your problem. That is so bad for them. Not saying its always going to cause a problem but next time definitely support them, thats probably what cause it to seperate the way it did then

i figured that. so there's no clip or anything in there to keep the shaft from sliding out of the joint?

no the actual cv housing, the splines are on the shaft itself, thats mates to the hub assembly.

the cv cage i guess might be a little easier to relate too

yeah the setup doesnt havent a pin then, so enough force and you can have it fall apart, and as you know that whole assembly just hanging there weighs a decent amount so that was you problem, just support it next time. As long as it wasnt damaged and went back together you should be fine now

Nothing holds our stockers together, it can just slide in and out. It's like a 3-point star (but round fat points, lol) pattern on the inner, and a receiver on the outer section of the CV. I got to see mine in all it's glory when it exploded

I don't know if my DSS level 2 axles have retainers or not, they are still in one piece

the back is a little high, i'll take pics when i get that taken care of this afternoon. it looks amazing. the ride quality is also really good, everything just feels tighter. that and driveways are now a pain in the ass.
