I'm looking into buying a cobalt here real soon and i can't decide whether or not to just buy the ss/sc or just buy the 2.0 and save the money for mods.

Easy choice
2.0 SC 210 HP
2.0 TC 260 HP
2.4 173 HP
the ss/sc is the 2.0

ya i have until next year to decide which one i want. so i'm hoping to find you used around the time i do choose to buy one. but, as far as money towards modding, i'll probably have anywhere from 300-500 a month to save for modding. and thats without payments. i also have someone who can install everything and i can do decent myself too.
so those charges won't matter just a case of beer and we'll call it even

I chose the 2.4SS to be different, as there are much less heavily modded examples of the 2.4 then there is the of the 2.0 SS/SC.
But if your goal is to go fast for cheap, the 2.0 SS/SC or 2.0 SS/TC.
If you got alot of money and wanna go even faster though, turbo a 2.4.

If you want an out of the box beast that you probably wont need to fool around with to do what you want, 2.0 turbo. If you want to get into the modding and doing your own work and/or maybe you just love that supercharger whine (like me), go with the 2.0 supercharged (only made in 2005-2007). If you want to get better insurance quotes or you want a bigger engine that sounds cool as hell or if you want to do your own custom turbo/SC, then go with the 2.4.
If I had to choose, I'd go with the supercharged balt. Tons of aftermarket, LOTS of DIY stuff. The whine, easily upgradeable to gain more power. And looks amazing with the 18" rims, full SS body kit, and several other things.

i have performance mods which ran me about close to $1800 with springs.
appearance mods which came to about $900 including springs.
and a lot of random DIY's bringing the grand total to about $3000.
i may soon get the M62 eaton supercharger kit for $1500 and that'll put me at $4500 but also 250ish whp.

2.0...
you will see the 2.0 guys on here bitch about reliability sometimes, but they dont have anything on 2.4's..
I had an older style (1999) GM 2.4 in my last car.. and it was the worst ******* motor ever. I babied it to death but i had to have the tow truck man on speed dial.
the 2.0 comes out of the box with forced induction, you dont need any mods to go fast, you will love it regardless. Also, since it is the highest trim available, you get all the neat extras like leather seats and stuff. love love love my 2.0!!!!!
Only bad thing is parts availability, its not a common powertrain so prepare to wait for parts.. I always have mine overnighted from Lansing =) We have a great relationship with the local GM parts department.
