you sould just go out and buy a new air filter. the stock air filter is very restrictive and a spectre air filter is only $20. easy install and makes huge differnce in the whine. i dont know if anyone has just taken the bottom off and left the stock filter but maybe try it and let us know. might just work enough to get that sc whining

DONT do that, the stock filter is held in by the bottom lid, without it you take the chance of the filter falling off and well you can guess the rest....get an AEM dryflow filter if you want to mount and leave the cover off and ck out my how to on the mod....

DON'T DO THAT WITH THE STOCK FILTER!

there is no way to secure it, you have to buy a separate cone filter that clamps down on the upper airbox

I have done that !

Here is one filter (High flow) that will fit 100% in the stock airbox with the lower cover in place and it's specifically for the 2005-2006 Cobalt SS/SC :

http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...px?Prod=E-0777

Here is another one (High flow conical) that will fit too, but without the lower lid and you'll have to do a little hole to screw the collar that will held the filter in place :

You can but you are better off replacing the filter. Also, I would recommend cutting a metal mesh lid for the bottom of the airbox, then use the stock scews places through the mesh into the stock holes with washers to prevent any torque damage to the mesh.
