first oil change

This is what I purchased today for my first oil change. Should be fun.

5 quarts of..

and..

I don't really know if the filter makes much of a difference, but this is all they had.

The total was $51.90 for everything.

next time u change ur oil use 5w 30 its not a huge deal or anything but i put it in my car i only put 10w 30 in my old car cuz it had a slight oil leak in that pretty much stopped it. but now to talk about ur filter i would only use the acdelco cuz i have seen a TSB for after market filters that may cause catastrophic damage to the engine and it woulnt be fixed under warranty. if u dont have a dealer near u where u can get them from just order a few through crateenginedepot.com they have a really good deal on them if u buy more than one.

I thought 10W-30 was recommended not 5W-30?

also use an ACDelco filter next time, I used to work at advance and sold purolater filters out the ying yang. they are NOT bad filters, but the ECOtec engines have had problems in the past with oil pressure issues if not using an ACDelco filter

yeah, its definately 5w30. check your manual just to be sure (I have a 2.2 cavi and its says to use 5 or even 0w30.

Plus, you ALWAYS want to put a new filter with EVERY change, otherwise it defeats the purpose of changing the oil in the first place

Yeah the filters on these engines are....lets just say different...My balt is the only car I've ever seen with this type of filter. its just.... different lol. Hey on this note my balt hit 42k so i changed the plugs for the first time on an ecotec engine and i got to say, could they have made it any easier? +2 for awesome ingnition system. also totaly reccomend the bosch 4 electrode platinums, those plus a fuel delivery system cleaning via STP instantly eliminated all the power loss that i was experiencing. Yay for just like new.

bastard. Now I have to go buy plugs too. I am gonna do an oil change here in a week. So I am going with 5w30 royal purple. I heard platinum wasnt that good because it doesnt hold up against heat very well.

The biggest difference is that in most cars the filter is a metal cylinder with the filter on the inside, you thread it right into the oil line. On these, and if that sonata also has it its probably a new thing they're doing in small engines, the casing for the filter is attached to the block and you only change the paper part of the filter assembly. The first time i did one i thought i bought the wrong part lol.

yeah realisticly as long as you choose a respectable, certified brand what oil you use has little effect on your car. I buy whatever is on sale and I've never had a problem. Castro, Mobile, whatever. The only major difference between 5w-30 and 10w-30 is that 10w-30 IS NOT TO BE USED WHERE THE TEMPERATURE WILL BE BELOW 0 DEGREES. Thats kinda important. 10w-30 can not perform below 0. If its going to be that cold you need 5w-30 but its september so not much risk of that happening. Don't get me wrong most new cars are designed for use with 5w because it typically runs at a lower temperature, but 10w is recomended for most forced induction and multi valve cars. The cobalt is a multi valve car, so its all about what you prefer. The moral of the story is buying the most expensive oil will not make your car go faster.

ya i'm staying out of the brand wars but with the paper oil filters. they hold less oil in them, allowing for better ecological recycling. also supposedly they filter better then the traditional metal filters but who knows anymore lol.

honestly i would never buy royal purple, one of the biggest aftermarket scams ever.. oil is oil cept for Pennzoil will leave you oil pump clogged up with a wax substance.... Chevy recommends mobile one i would use mobile one... they obviously engineered this car to use mobile one and when a car manufacturer recommends to use a certain oil id use it because of the very small tolerances. there is no such thing as a performance oil for a daily driven car.... i don't know how much is it like 8 bucks a quart over 6 or mobile one... more beer money besides your engine wont know the difference

if u did a true test and reserch on oils, ud find that the only true synthetic oil in north america is MOTUL, the information is there that jsut b/c it states its true syntethic does not mean its true synthetic, even alll u mobil 1 arm humpers, amsoil, etc.... do the reserch, go into factories if u have to.

i looked into this while i fought with a local dealership about hwo motul is better than mobil 1, and therefore safer for my car, and could not void my warranty.

i would pull up all the data and links but its not worth it, if u do have the time go and look for yourself, if you look up motul i believe they have links to all the major manufacturers of oil that say they use a full synthetic oil and on the manufacturers own website states its true ingredients

also if u want the best oil, order from europe, they have oil that gurantees the life of the oil, and u could just regularly change your oil filter and top up the oil, thats how super refined there synthetic oil is

Not the engine we're testing at work - it's turbocharged, and it uses 0W-40 Synthetic.
